Around the State

Forty-five local governmental officials and state Legislators from the 47th Representative District and the 28th Senatorial District recently met at New Salem. The purpose of the meeting was to acquaint Legislators with the needs of local governments and to consider needed legislation. Legislators present were Representatives Robert W. McCarthy, Conference Chairman of Lincoln, Barrett F. Rodgers of Atlanta and State Senator Elbert S. Smith of Decatur . . . Seventy-five municipal officials representing- fifteen communities attended the Northwest Municipal Association meeting at Orion. Speakers for the occasion were E. Lee Siemon, Rock Island Civil Defense Director and Mayor Paul C. Johnson of Moline. New members are Annawan and Osco . . . Salem is negotiating the sale of its power plant . . . the Flora city council has voted to abandon its light plant, and buy power from C.I.P.S. for resale. The city will handle the distribution and billing . . . The Benton Chamber of Commerce has agreed to loan the City of Benton $2,000 to aid in an airport expansion plan . . . Carthage and Eureka join the list of cities that have passed emergency water conservation ordinances . . . Evanston city council is considering a plan to enlarge its beach areas. Estimated costs are $1,365,658 with the Federal Government expected to pay $383,828 for lake front protection . . .

Bond Issues Approved

Tuscola, $120,000 issue to finance a community swimming pool . . . Herrin, $627,000 in water and sewer revenue bonds for improvements and $305,000 to refund outstanding water and sewer bonds . . . Hartford, $80,000 issue to build a new municipal building. This was the second referendum on the issue, the first referendum which passed on March 27th was declared void on a typographical error. Both issues carried by approximately four to one . . . Wood River, $140,000 issue to improve the municipal swimming pool . . . Moline, $500,000 in water revenue bonds to improve the water system . . . Charleston, by a total of 43 votes, a $400,000 general obligation bond issue has been approved. In addition $1,045,000 in water and sewer revenue bonds and about $225,000 from the State for benefits to Eastern Illinois State College will be needed to finish the project . . . Hopedale, $55,000 issue approved at referendum to finance street improvements . . . Teutopolis, $70,000 issue to improve and enlarge the water and sewer systems . . . Benton $79,000 in sewerage improvement and refunding bonds to extend the sewerage system . . . Glen Carbon, $98,500 in water revenue bonds to improve the water system and refund $33,500 in water revenue bonds outstanding . . .

Appointments and Elections

Harry G. Miller to become commissioner of streets and alleys in Mt. Carmel . . . Robert G. Scott to be village attorney, Milan . . . W. L. Rahn has been appointed city treasurer and finance director of Elgin . . . Albert Schmitt to be city treasurer of East Peoria . . . Nicholas Goss village president of Morristown . . . Roy Bain to be police chief of Carbondale . . . Dominco Basso, Jr. and Jack Freeman have been elected aldermen at Sesser . . .

Bond Issues Defeated

LaSalle, $1,600,000 issue for sewer improvements, by a vote of 2,501 against to 1,870 for. This is the second defeat for the issue in two years...
