CITY HALL GOSSIP

City Manager George Bean of Peoria has been informed that the Peoria police department has won third honors in the national police fleet safety contest, sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Safety Council . . . Rockford voters will ballot November 6th on a $8,878,000 bond issue for storm sewers and other flood control projects . . . the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association recently completed their annual meeting in Bloomington . . . Mayor Nelson Howarth of Springfield reports that since establishment of one man patrols and additional patrol car coverage, that police equipment was averaging an additional 14,273 miles per month in patrolling city streets . . . the Dutch Elm Tree Disease continues to present a threat to many municipalities. Most recent reports of diseased trees come from North Chicago, Barrington and Batavia. Commissioner James E. McGinty of Champaign estimates that there are more than 600 dead or dying Dutch Elm trees in the city. In the past three years about 2,335 Champaign trees have been lost to the disease . . . Voters in Robinson in an advisory referendum defeated by a margin of about 5 to 1 the proposition to enact the 1/2 cent municipal sales tax.

Bond Issues Approved

Quincy, $3,750,000 in water revenue bonds for rehabilitation and expansion of the water system. The council also passed a new schedule of higher water rates to insure adequate revenue . . . Albion, voters have approved the issuance of $16,000 in bonds to construct a water system . . . Baylis, $14,000 in general obligation to defray a portion of the cost of a water system . . . Champaign voters have approved the issuance of $125,000 in bonds for construction of two fire department substations . . . Elgin, $500,000 in motor vehicles parking system revenue bonds to enlarge and improve parking facilities and to refund outstanding bonds . . . Georgetown, $480,000 in gas utility refunding revenue bonds.

Appointments and Elections

Officials elected recently in New Boston are: Leonard Carr, Mayor; Clarence Bore, alderman; Raymond Settles, street commissioner; Richard Dickens, city marshal and Arthur Maddox, city treasurer . . . Fred Eichelkraut named Mayor at Ottawa and Niles J. Bahen was named to complete Mr. Kichelkraut's term as commissioner . . . Alderman W. C. Donelson as acting mayor of Creal Springs . . . C. B. Sauer to be a member of the village board of Dana . . . Frank Egan named president of village board at Port Byron . . . Ralph Goin as fire chief at Centralia . . . Miss Melba Pierson to be city clerk at Batavia . . . Moss Meersman as assistant city attorney of Moline . . . Richard Brown was recently appointed city manager of Western Springs.

Resignations

Arthur W. Pech as city treasurer of Atlanta . . . Ray Adams as village president at Creal Springs.

Deaths

Charles L. Howard who served as Mayor of Moweaqua from 1930 to 1953 . . . Howard Wells, village trustee at Manito, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident . . . Waldo R. Pasquey, police chief of Chillicothe . . . Frank A. Young, city clerk at Piano . . . LaVerne Woodard, city clerk at Batavia. Mr. Woodard served as city clerk for 37 years, first being elected in 1919 . . . W. K. Anderson, former Mayor of Ohio. Mr. Anderson served three terms as Mayor.
