STUDENTS

By John Bruns and Marilyn Coombs

On Saturday, April 7, the IPRS Student Branch held its annual meeting at the University of Illinois. At the meeting, students from seven colleges and universities were represented. Schools included EIU, ISU, Parkland, SIU, Triton, U of I, and WIU.

Dr. Frank Lupton, acting chairman of WIU Department of Recreation Park Administration, will continue as the faculty advisor for the upcoming year. Along with Dr. Lupton, Jack White (Champaign Park District), Jerry Kelly (NTRS president), Kay Kastel (IPRS), Dr. Pezoldt (U of I), and Dave Miller (U of I) attended, giving their ideas and support to the student Branch.

President Marilyn Coombs, U of I, conducted the business meeting. Committee and annual reports were given, and as the last order of business, officer elections were held. Ed Haag, president-elect, was installed as president. The newly elected officers are: President-elect John Bruns, Parkland; Vice-president Rich Meynen, U of I; Secretary Sharon Synkoop, WIU; Treasurer Chip Huge, SIU; IAPD Representative Darwin Shroyer, U of I. Congratulations to the new officers.

Thirty Students from the Illinois universities participated in Holly, Michigan at the Second Annual National Student Recreation and Park Society, Great Lakes Regional Conference, "Get it On." Long rides didn't deter over 150 students from Minnesota, Iowa, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio from participating.

The sessions were pertinent and varied. These included interviewing for the first job, inner-city programming, playground planning, public relations, and park maintenance.

Rapelling (down the chimney), cross-country skiing, and acclimatization sessions were held. Rainy day activities and innovative games stimulated a great exchange of ideas.

The conference was planned and carried out mostly by students in the Great Lakes Region. Thanks to professionals and educators in the area, students were able to work together and accomplish a major goal.

(Editors note: Marilyn Coombs, U of I, is past president, and John Bruns, Parkland, is president-elect of the Student Branch of IPRS.)
