Debbie has received a B.S. Degree in Recreation and Park Administration from the University of Illinois and is presently a unit from completion of her M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration. She has been a member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Society and the National Recreation and Park Association. She also served as Program Chairman for the Student Recreation Organization at the University of Illinois. ______________________________ BRUCE EVERLY ELECTED COMMISSIONER Bruce B. Everly, President of McFadzean and Everly, Limited, was elected on April 3 to the Board of Commissioners of the Arlington Heights Park District. Bruce, who was literally born and raised in the Glencoe Parks, is carrying out a family tradition of Park and Recreation association. His father is widely known in the field having served as Superintendent of Parks and Recreation in Glencoe for over 30 years and also is the founder and present Chairman of the Board of McFadzean and Everly, Limited. Brother Bob and his maternal grandfather have also been long identified in Parks and Recreation. Bruce's grandfather participated in the early planning and development of Starved Rock State Park. Bruce feels that in this new role as an elected Park Commissioner he can bring his Park and Recreation experience to the Board so as to benefit his home community—also, the experience that he gains from public service as a commissioner will broaden his effectiveness to the boards which are clients of his planning firms, McFadzean and Everly. ______________________________
Mr. Hedges was graduated from Indiana University in 1967 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration, and then entered the Navy where he was a special officer in charge of recreation programs and facilities. He received an M.S. degree in Recreation and Park Administration in 1971 from Indiana University, and then taught recreation courses at the University of Iowa until accepting the position at Niles. ______________________________ Frank H. McCoy was recently appointed Superintendent of Parks for the City of Spokane, Washington. McCoy has been Director of Parks and Recreation for the Franklin Park Park District, Franklin Park, Illinois; and Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for the Chehalem Park and Recreation District in Newberg, Oregon. Mr. McCoy is a graduate of Texas A&M University, and has a Masters in Park and Recreation Management from the University of Oregon. She was selected as the woman student who demonstrated the most progress toward her desired career goals. She will receive $100 and a certificate of merit. Her name will be inscribed on the SARP plaque in the 100 Building on the college campus, 10900 S. 88th Ave., Palos Hills. Mrs. Simon, the mother of three children, was instrumental in organizing and maintaining a park district in Bridgeview. She served the district as a volunteer in many capacities including board and office secretary, receptionist, preschool supervisor and program director. Because of her involvement and interest in park activities, Mrs. Simon enrolled in Moraine Valley's recreation leadership program. With the cooperation of her family, she maintained her household, carried 14 hours of classes at Moraine Valley and worked eight hours a day. She completed her degree requirements in December, 1972. Roy was formerly a Vice President with the firm of McFadzean and Everly, Ltd. (14 years), prior to which he was Superintendent of Parks for six years with the Glenview Park District, Glenview, Illinois. Roy is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association, Midwest Institute of Park Association of Park Districts, and served on the Glenview Plan Commission during 1970-1971. ______________________________ O'MALLEY ELECTED CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT PRESIDENT Patrick L. O'Malley was elected president of the board of commissioners of the Chicago Park District and William A. Lee was re-elected vice president. O'Malley is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Canteen Corp. He was chairman of the Chicago Plan Commission from 1969 to 1973 and chairman of the Chicago Home Rule Commission from 1971 until 1973, when the commission's work was completed. "It is a tremendous privilege to serve as a park commissioner by appointment of Mayor Richard J. Daley, and as president by election by my fellow commissioners," O'Malley said, adding "Chicago has one of the finest park systems in the world, but perhaps we can make it even greater." O'Malley praised Gen. Supt. Edmund L. Kelley as "one of the finest there is in the business." He said he expected to enjoy working with Kelly and with the entire park district staff. Comr. Franklin B. Schmick nominated O'Malley for president. Comr. Gale E. Sayers nominated Lee for reelection as vice-president. Lee had served as acting president since the resignation of President Daniel J. Shannon. O'Malley has been board chairman of Canteen Corp. since 1972. Before that he had served as president and chief executive officer for 10 years. His previous business association of 30 years was with the Coca-Cola Company as vice president and general sales manager. He is a director of numerous business firms and civic groups. In 1970 he was presented with B'nai B'rith's first "Great American Award." In 1972 he won the national Horatio Alger award from the American Schools and Colleges Association. ______________________________
FRANK KIRK NEW DIRECTOR OF DLGA Frank A. Kirk, the new director of the Department of Local Government Affairs, is no stranger to local government problems. A resident of Carbondale since 1957, he served from 1964 to 1969 as a Carbondale city councilman and at the time of his appointment as director he was a community consultant in Community Development Services at Southern Illinois University. Mr. Kirk has also served as chief Model Cities Planner for the City of Carbondale and was chairman of the Carbondale Citizens Advisory Committee from 1963 to 1968. From 1960 to 1964, he was the southern Illinois regional administrator for the Illinois Board of Economic Development and at one time served as a staff assistant to SIU president, Delyte Morris. Mr. Kirk has also worked extensively in human relations training and program development with local anti-poverty agencies, human relations commissions, planning commissions, and citizen groups. On the national level, he has served on Model Cities and Teachers Corps training projects. He is also a member of the American Institute of Planners and has a masters degree in city and regional planning from the University of Chicago. Illinois Parks and Recreation 19 July/August, 1973 |
