State Documents

  • Directory of State Services for Handicapped People, Department of Rehabilitation Services (June 1981), 54 pp.

In addition to an alphabetical listing of agencies and a descriptive paragraph on each, this directory also provides a list of communities and the names and addresses of agencies operating in each one.

  • Illinois Energy Programs, Summary, Illinois Institute of Natural Resources (1981), 17 pp.

During the last few years numerous programs, projects and agencies have become involved in energy conservation and development. This booklet will help citizens find out how the state can assist with certain kinds of programs, what the state is doing in various areas, and where they may turn for further assistance.

  • Redlining: Homeowners Insurance, by the Illinois Legislative Investigating Commission (June 1981), 101 pp.

Insurance redlining in Chicago can be traced back to the early 1960s. The state has taken steps to combat the problem, including the Illinois FAIR Plan and specific legislation prohibiting redlining. A fundamental disagreement exists about the definition of the term; however it is defined, there seem to be far fewer instances of redlining today, and many of these are due to misunderstanding or incomplete information.

  • Mine Subsidence in Illinois: Facts for the Homeowner Considering Insurance, by Paul B. DuMontelle and others, Illinois State Geological Survey (August 1981), 24 pp.

About 750,000 acres of land have been undermined for coal in Illinois. Although subsidence of the surface above coal mines is not common, it does occur. This pamphlet will help homeowners learn what to look for and how to determine whether to insure their homes against possible damage.

  • Illinois Population Projections, Bureau of the Budget (June 1981), 236 pp.

The number of school-age children will decrease until 1995 and then grow moderately; there will be continuing increases in absolute numbers and percentage of the aged; but the state will have a more solid base of working people than will the country as a whole. These and other projections are provided to assist those concerned with planning for future needs. Trends and projections from 1870 to 2025 are also given for each county.

Items listed under State Documents have been received by the Documents Unit, Illinois State Library, Springfield, and are usually available from public libraries in the state through interlibrary loan.                         Anna J. Merritt
