Mr. Speaker: Presiding Officers of the Illinois House of Representatives, 1818-1980, by Mary Redmond, Office of the Speaker of the House, Illinois General Assembly, (March 1981), 141 pp.

This extremely attractive volume presents one to two-page biographies of every speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives starting with John Messinger. Where possible, portraits are provided as well as textual sources for those interested in futher information. An appendix shows that only one person, David E. Shanahan (1862-1936), served the record of six terms as speaker and that most speakers serve just one term.

Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly: Incidence and Characteristics, Legislation and Policy Recommendations, Britta B. Harris (project codirector) and John Poertner (community study director), Sangamon State University and Illinois Department on Aging (1981).

The abuse and neglect of older persons is similar in magnitude to that of children. In addition to looking into the nature and extent of the problem, this study also investigates its legal aspects and examines various policy options. Three possible models for dealing with elder abuse and neglect are given.

A Layman's Guide to Farmers Home Administration, compiled by Jon Linfield, former Illinois FmHA director (no date), 24 pp.

Begun in the New Deal days of the 1930s, the FmHA today has 34 different programs and lends over $12 billion annually. The guide explains the eligibility standards for various loans and suggests how applicants can most effectively use the system.

The Legacy of Virginia S. Eifert: A Bibliography, by Orvetta M. Robinson, published jointly by Western Illinois University Library and the Illinois State Museum (1981), 20 pp.

This booklet was prepared in conjunction with the Virginia S. Eifert Exhibit held from September to November 1981 at Western Illinos Library. Mrs. Eifert, a nature artist, photographer and writer, is perhaps best known for her contributions to the State Museum's publication, The Living Museum, which she started in 1939.
