 Illinois Data Book, 1982 edition, Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (1982), 185 pp.

This is the seventh edition of a rich source of information on statewide and regional economic indicators. Subjects covered include: gross state product, personal income, manufacturing, agriculture, mining, transportation, employment and wages, and population.

 Legislative Oversight in Illinois, edited by James D. Nowlan and Anna J. Merritt, Institute of Government and Public Affairs (August 1982), 116 pp.

The Illinois General Assembly has significantly increased its oversight activities of the executive branch in the last 20 years. To assess this development and to speculate about future trends, some 50 government officials and academicians gathered at an assembly in January 1982. This volume comprises the report of that assembly, the background papers and speeches.

 Redistricting: An Exercise in Prophecy, edited by Anna J. Merritt, Institute of Government and Public Affairs and Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois (August 1982), 133 pp.

The seven essays included in this volume cover such topics as the history of redistricting in Illinois, reapportionment and black politics in Chicago, population trends, gerrymandering and legal issues. Maps showing the 1971 and 1981 boundaries are also included.

 The Book of the States, 1982-83, The Council of State Governments, Lexington, Kentucky (1982), 734 pp. ($35.00).

This invaluable resource on all aspects of governance in the 50 states, contains essays on specific issues as well as page upon page of tables. Topics covered include elections, the executive branch, legislatures, the judiciary, government employment, finances and such services as education, transportation, housing and natural resources. A half page is also devoted to specific information about each state, ranging from the state's nickname and official bird to the name of the president of the Senate and the population of the largest city. Three supplements are also available: State Elective Officials and the Legislatures: 1981-82, State Legislative Leadership, Committees and Staff, 1981-82, and State Administrative Officials Classified by Function: 1981-82.
