State Documents

■ Second Governor's Conference on the Protection of Illinois Farmland, Department of Energy and Natural Resources, Document No. 83/01 (December 1982), 47 pp.; available free from the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Farmland Protection.

The dozen presentations given at the August 1982 conference covered such topics as "Farmland Retention: New Federal Initiatives," "Agricultural Lands Evaluation and Site Assessment System," "Protecting Farmland Without Zoning" and "Involvement of Agricultural Organizations in Farmland Protection." The farmland protection programs in DeKalb, McHenry and Kane counties are also described, and Gov. James R. Thompson's opening remarks are included as well.

■ Assessment of Future Economic Tradeoffs Between Coal Mining and Agriculture, Document No. 81/29, by Linda L. Huff, Gregg Jarrell and Sherry Jarrell for Illinois Department of Energy and Resources (July 1982), 406 pp.

Both coal mining and agriculture play an important role in this state's economy; unfortunately, the land required by the two is frequently the same. Since it is difficult to predict society's needs in the two areas, choosing the appropriate use of the land is also problematic. This study looks at a variety of issues relating to these questions, including the economic impact of agriculture and mining at the state, county and local levels, as well as the economics of converting farmland and the environmental effects of mining.

■ Financing Sources Directory, Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, 222 S. College, Springfield 62706 (April 1983), $10 to DCCA Urban Planning Assistance Fund.

This directory lists banks, savings and loans, insurance and venture capital firms that can provide financial assistance to business owners and local governments. It also contains information on local, state and federal programs that are available to businesses.
