The Champaign Park District has announced the appointment of four new staff members. CYNTHIA CAPEK is the director of recreation. She previously served as a program supervisor for the County Recreation Division in Arlington, Va. Her bachelor's degree from California State College in California, Pa., and a master's degree from Penn State University are both in parks and recreation.

KATHLEEN SCHLETENS is now special recreation director. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in leisure studies emphasizing therapeutic recreation. She expects to complete work on a master's degree in December, 1984.

FRANESSA STALTER serves as sports supervisor. She has a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation from Eastern Illinois University (August, 1984) and an associate degree from Parkland College.

WALTER SMITH is a recreation supervisor. He previously worked as a physical education director with the Chicago Boys' Club and as a technician at the Adler Zone Center in Champaign.

The South Suburban Park and Recreation Professional Association (SSPRPA) awarded two $100 scholarships to undergraduate students as part of its 1984 awards program.

Receiving scholarships were CHRISTINE HALL of Homewood, a student at Illinois State University, and JAMES GIBLIN from Chicago. He attended Moraine Valley Community College and will begin his studies at Western Illinois University this fall.

The SSPRPA scholarship is available to undergraduate students who reside in the South Suburban region, or who have completed a minimum of 500 hours of work with an SSPRPA member agency. Applicants must be attending an Illinois two- or four-year institution, and have at least one term of study remaining.

ANNA STARKOWSKI is the new director of the Chicago Park District's citywide orchestra.

She takes over from FANNY A. HASSLER, who founded the orchestra in 1948 and was its conductor for more than three decades. She will remain as consultant.

JOB POSITION

Byron Forest Preserve District is seeking a maintenance supervisor and naturalist. Salary range is $14,000 to $16,500 (entry level determined by experience and education). CHERYL HORVATH is the new sports coordinator for the Urbana Park District. A 1982 graduate of the University of Illinois' Leisure Studies Department, she worked for the Division of Campus Recreation there. She was also employed in the Intramural Department at San Diego State University.

DAVID W. MOGLE is the new superintendent of recreation for the Waukegan Park District. He replaces RONALD W. DUMKE who became director of the District.

Mogle previously was superintendent of recreation at Clinton, Iowa. He was also employed by the Dundee Park District in Carpentersville.

Mogle is a graduate of Western Illinois University. He has a bachelor of science degree in park and recreation administration.

Obituaries

EARL ELLIOT, former director of the Rockford Park District, died August 2. He was 81.

A native of Nevada, Iowa, Elliot graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in landscape architecture. He joined the Rockford Park District in 1927 as landscape engineer and became director in 1934. He retired from the District in 1968 after 41 years of service.

In 1965, he was awarded the American Institute of Park Executives highest honor — the Honorary Fellowship. He was also an active member of the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Three new faculty additions have been announced by the Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Western Illinois University (WIU).

DR. ANTHONY J. ZITO recently joined the faculty as an associate professor. His primary responsibility is graduate coordinator. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Zito served two years as the coordinator of the community/commercial option of the parks, recreation and conservation curriculum at East Carolina. He was also a state extension recreation specialist for the University of Missouri. In addition, Dr. Zito served for nine years as director of parks and recreation for the Memorial Park District in Bellwood, and nine years in various capacities for the Logan Square Chicago Roys' Club.

Dr. Zito received his Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Iowa in 1982, his M.S. in recreation and park administration from the University of Illinois in 1974 and his B.A. in psychology from DePaul University in 1964.

ANN MCCALL ZITO has been appointed to a part-time faculty position. Ms. Zito previously served two years on the faculty of the College of St. Francis in Joliet as therapeutic recreation coordinator. She served five years as part-time therapeutic recreation coordinator. Memorial Park District, Bellwood, and four years on the activity therapy staff at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in Chicago. She received a B.S. degree in recreation from the University of Iowa and a M.S. degree in recreation and park administration from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.




Anthony Zito Ann Zito Sandra Parker

SANDRA PARKER is an assistant professor at WIU. Ms. Parker is in the process of completing her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, where her area of concentration was programming and gerontology. While in Maryland, she was actively involved in working with a senior exercise program at a community college. From 1967 to 1980, she was assistant professor of physical education at Hope College in Holland, Mich.

Ms. Parker has a M.S. degree in physical education and a M.S. degree in counseling and personnel services from Western Michigan University. Her B.A. degree is from Hope College in Holland, Mich.
