Stepping back in time

The Illinois Department of Conservation, private corporations and various individuals worked with the Lockport Township Park District and its Board of Commissioners to make the trail a reality.

The Lockport Township Park District recently dedicated its Illinois and Michigan (I and M) Canal Recreational Historical Trail System. The summer ceremony marked the first completed park district trail system within the I and M Canal National Heritage Corridor, which was created by President Reagan in August, 1984.

"A new dimension has been added to the service provided by the park district," said district Director Max Woods. "The trail's multi-purpose will provide all of us with a more satisfying, fulfilling life."

The past and present come together in a unique heritage preservation program.

Archaeologists from Illinois State University were commissioned to unearth items which would clearly establish the location of industry that once lined the canal banks. All items will eventually be displayed at a visitors' center which the DOC plans to open in a part of the Gaylord Building shown here.

The trail system features interpretive signage explaining the history of the I and M Canal. Local architecture is also highlighted in the signage relating the significance of each building and its connection to the canal.

James Darosa, the district's superintendent of parks and planning, says wild flowers, remnants of historic buildings, boat foundations and limestone bluffs create a unique experience for trail users. The trail system is now open for both active and passive recreational pursuits including jogging, hiking, biking and crosscountry skiing.

The six-year restoration and development project was a cooperative venture between the park district and the Illinois Department of Conservation (DOC). It's hoped the trail system will serve as a model for other canal communities along the corridor that plan future development.
