This is the first time the event has ever been held in the United States. To date, participating teams represent Cuba, Egypt, Hungary, Japan, the Soviet Union and the United States.

In conjunction with this event, a Sports Medicine Conference will be held on Nov. 14 at the Oak Lawn Hilton Inn. This workshop, Symposium on Wrestlers' Injuries, is sponsored by the Oak Lawn Park District and the Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. The conference has been approved for continuing medical education category I credit. The $25 registration fee covers both the conference and lunch.

The district and its International Wrestling Club also hosted the World Greco-Roman team trials in September. That competition determined who would represent the United States at the World Championship being held in Budapest, Hungary; the Pan American Games, and the World Cup competition.
