State Documents

■  Radon in Illinois, Governor's Radon Task Force (November 1986), 51 pp.; Department of Nuclear Safety, 1035 Outer Park Dr., Springfield 62704.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is present in all soils and rocks. It may pose a health hazard. Because it has been found in homes in certain parts of the country, a task force was formed to study the situation. This report indicates that there is no major radon problem in the state but that officials should nonetheless do more testing and provide more information to the public on the subject.

■  Directory of Illinois Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Treatment Services, Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (Spring 1986), State of Illinois Center, 100 W. Randolph, Suite 5-600, Chicago 60601.

This directory provides an alphabetical list, by county, of alcoholism and substance abuse treatment services in the state. Additional information provided includes: the type of service, the population group served (adult, adolescent, male, female), phone number and special services if any.

■  Illinois Calendar of Events, October 1986-March 1986, Office of Tourism, Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (October 1986), 123 pp.; Tourist Information Center, 310 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago 60604.

For those who wonder what interesting things are going on in other parts of the state (or in their own area, for that matter), and for those who know people in other states who might want a nice vacation spot — this booklet is ideal. In addition to a separate recreational guide, for each month there is a list of festivals and special events, museum exhibits and music and theater performances. Booklet updates are published every four months, so the next one will be available in April.

■  Landscaping for Wildlife, Department of Conservation (n.d.), 12 pp.; Natural Heritage Division, 524 S. Second, Springfield 62706.

As its subtitle says, this pamphlet is a guide to inviting wildlife to your backyard. It lists Illinois native tall trees, small trees and shrubs; provides tips on backyard bird feeding; and explains how to go about planting a prairie garden. It also lists grasses, herbs and forbs that are native to this state and what forms of wildlife are attracted to each.        Anna J. Merritt
