Siting the Superconducting Super Collider in Northeastern Illinois: Environmental Screening Atlas, Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources, Room 300 325 W. Adams St., Springfield 62706 (1986), 96 pp.

In late 1987 the U.S. Department of Energy is expected to conduct a national competitor for a site for the superconducting super collider (SSC). This 20-trillion electron volt accelerator will collide beams of subatomic particles; the reactions will provide physicists with new data for exploring the nature of matter and the origin of the universe. The SSC Task Force established in 1984 by Gov. James R. Thompson, is providing the organization and data needed to bring the project to Illinois. This atlas is part of the initial environmental investigation. It describes the physical setting of the proposed site in northeastern Illinois and provides maps of the numerous wells and borings done so far. A number of conservation and preservation issues connected with the project are discussed as are the area's cultural features.

■ Illinois Tax Climate, Taxpayers' Federation of Illinois, 201 E. Adams St.. Springfield 62701 (1987), 85 pp.; $8.00.

Like its 12 predecessors, this edition of Illinois Tax Climate compares this state's tax laws with those of a number of other states. For this edition they are: California, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin. Because utility gross receipts taxes become a major source of revenue in many states, a new section on utility taxes has been added. As is usual with federation publications, the format for this report and the information it contains are clear, concise and extremely well presented. Anna J. Merritt
