State Comptroller Roland W. Burns has announced the availability of a new publication designed to help local government officials stretch their tax dollars.

Entitled an Investment Guide for Illinois Local Governments, the publication provides simplified yet thorough measures for the investment of public funds.

"Managing public funds is an increasingly difficult task and an enormous responsibility for officials at all levels of government," said Burns.

"Investing the financial asset of your government is a way to stretch those dollars and make them work for you," he said. "Our Investment Guide details the various investment opportunities available to local governments."

The publication also reviews such issues as safety of principal, liquidity, maximum rate of return, responsibilities of officials, and includes statutory provisions governing the investment of public funds.

Copies of the Investment Guide for Illinois Local Governments are available at no charge by writing or calling: Pat Caruso, Office of the Comptroller, Local Government Fiscal Programs, 325 West Adams 4th Floor, Springfield, IL 62706, (217) 785-7414.
