The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) formally acknowledge the Illinois communities of Thebes and Kampsville with awards for Excellence in Flood Hazard Management at the Association's llth annual conference in Seattle.

The communities were recognized for their implementation of hazard mitigation plans which were developed following major floods, the Association said.

Both Thebes and Kampsville reflect a growing trend in flood protection and damage reduction: the non-structural approach, it said adding that their efforts have provided the impetus for the Illinois General Assembly to begin appropriating funds for non-structural flood damage reduction.

The ILLINOIS MUNICIPAL REVIEW continues to be an open forum of expression for municipalities. Articles appearing in the Review do not necessarily express the views of the League or its staff but those of the various authors.
