Local recreators provide SCORP input

Board members and administrators of various Illinois park, recreation, forest preserve and conservation agencies participated in a special "think session" in August to provide input for the 1988 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Planning (SCORP) program.

The Illinois Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) served as co-hosts for the Springfield meeting to gain direct input from local recreational agencies on a statewide basis.

"Local recreational opportunities are perhaps the greatest source of leisure opportunities to all people," explained Dr. Edward Hoffman, supervisor of the DOC's Division of Planning.

"We will utilize the input from these local providers in conjunction with comments from the general public to determine major concerns about outdoor recreation statewide," he said.

"The ideas will also help to determine the type of action that local park and recreation agencies can take to address their concerns."

Jerry Handlon, director of the Schaumburg Park District; Robert Toalson, general manager of the Champaign Park District, and George Whitehead, director of the Carbondale Park District, served as facilitators for the SCORP meeting.
