Concord Recreation Center Changes Name

The Rockford Park District's Board of Commissioners approved the name change of Concord Recreation Center to Washington Park Community Recreation Center on Monday, July 25, at its monthly finance meeting.

The change comes after much confusion among citizens in differentiating the only District recreation center and the adjacent Rockford Housing Authority's Concord Commons Housing Complex.

Booths 94% Sold Out in June '88!

Exhibitors in the 1989 Mid-Am Horticultural Trade Show, January 20-22, 1989, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, have contracted for booths at a record pace. Mid-Am '89 is 94 percent sold out, with less than 20 booths remaining to be available for contract. The total 60,223 square feet of exhibit space is expected to be completely filled by Labor Day.

Nursery growers, landscape contractors, garden center suppliers, interiorscapers and many more will exhibit their products and demonstrate their services and equipment.

Mid-Am Board president Don Groth isn't surprised at how quickly Mid-Am booths are selling. "Judging by the record attendance we had for Mid-Am '88, exhibitors seem more enthusiastic than ever about reaching new and returning buyers at Mid-Am. Our reputation for a quality show is attracting the best group of exhibitors we've ever had," he notes.

Glenview Senior Citizen Club Wins Governor's Home Town Award

The Glenview Senior Citizen Club recently received the 1988 Governor's Home Town Award for excellence in exemplary volunteer efforts in communities throughout Illinois. This year, 77 community projects in ten population categories were selected for awards along with special youth and senior citizen achievements. Glenview Senior Citizen Club is sponsored by the Glenview Park District.

Glenview Senior Citizen Club won top honors in state-wide volunteer efforts, earning the 1988 Governor's Home Town Award for excellence. Standing proudly beside their winning road sign are Mr. Harvey Bassett, one of several chairpersons who coordinated the All Family Pancake Carnival, and Ms. Joyce L. Pottinger, director of the Glenview Senior Citizen Club.

According to Department of Commerce and Community Affairs Director, Jay R. Hedges, entries were judged on local need and community participation, as well as the project's results and continuity. Winners received a commemorative plaque and a road sign proclaiming the community's selection as a winner in the competition.

The program entered was Glenview Senior Citizen Club's annual All Family Pancake Carnival — an "all you can eat" pancake brunch. The ten-year old carnival-brunch provides Glenview residents an opportunity to share an enjoyable day with older adults. Over 100 seniors carry out the program with approximately 400 people attending this year.

To maximize the community's participation, the Pancake Carnival occurs on a Saturday during spring vacation time when children are home from school and families are seeking fun things to do together. Attendees enjoy a delicious pancake brunch, a "bottomless" cup of coffee and are entertained by the Senior Citizen Club's ten member Good Times Band. Event highlights include 15 carnival games, a raffle, sale and lots of festive decorations.

Glenview Senior Citizen Club's director, Ms. Joyce L. Pottinger, was present in Springfield on Wednesday, June 22, to receive the award, accompanied by the chairpersons responsible for the 1987-88 award-winning project: Bill Bunn, president; Harvey Bassett, Mary Ellen Wolff and Anne Lind. Lieutenant Governor George H. Ryan presented the honors during the Governor's Home Town Awards banquet ceremony and thanked all who had gathered for recognition. "Volunteers can make a real difference in the quality of life in their communities," he said. IAPD/IPRA congratulates the Glenview Senior Citizen Club for their excellent program!

Elmhurst Park District Mourns the Death of Commissioner Joanne Wagner

Joanne Butterfield Wagner, Elmhurst Park District's longest serving member on its Board of Directors, passed away on July 13, 1988.

As a board member for over 29 years, Joanne Wagner contributed her energy, time and talent in many ways for nearly half of her life. Mrs. Wagner served as president of the Park Board on six occasions and continually provided leadership for the other commissioners and staff. She was honored by the community for her leadership role in the Park District by receiving the Elmhurst Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1986.

Mrs. Wagner faithfully served the community by insisting on providing a wide array of services and facilities at the most reasonable prices. She continually encouraged public input into the decision-making process and listened to those who had suggestions for improvement.

From the start of her Park Board service, the Elmhurst Park District steadily improved. She was instrumental in the passage of two community-wide Park District referenda that considerably enhanced recreation opportunities. A total of 336 of the District's 428 acres were leased or purchased during her board tenure. Over 150 recreation programs, serving from preschoolers to senior citizens, were added. The Elmhurst Community Center, The Courts Indoor Tennis/Handball/Racquetball facility. The Abbey Senior Citizens' Center and York Commons Swimming Pool have been added since Mrs. Wagner recognized the need for these facilities. She is credited for being the driving force behind the development of Sugar Creek Golf Course, a shared operation with the village of Villa Park.

"It is fair to say that no one in the community has exerted the effort to improve the community's recreational offerings as much as Joanne," commented Ray W. Fick, Park Board president. "Her continued dedication was a quiet inspiration to the staff and to the board members who respected her sincere desire to serve the Elmhurst community in a distinguished manner."
