President's Message

By BOB ANSTINE, Mayor, Macomb
President, Illinois Municipal League

Let this month's message be one of appreciation to those cities and villages who were so vocal and suggestive to the Illinois General Assembly in the final days of June. This resulted in passing the legislation which shares the state income tax and MFT raises with local government. Governor Jim Thompson has signed both items into law. Cities and villages will receive approximately $30 per capita for the first year and $33 per capita the second year from the state income tax legislation. An additional $4.30 per capita from motor fuel tax increase will be forthcoming. All villages and cities are cautioned to use the funds wisely.

Your Illinois State Representative and Senator should be included in all project announcements and ground breaking activities.

Of the 900 bills introduced to the Illinois General Assembly impacting cities and villages, a handful need your immediate attention. Please read IML Legislative Bulletin Nos. 14 and 15. Convey in writing your thoughts to Governor Thompson immediately.

The League's 76th Annual Conference is in Chicago Hilton & Towers, September 15-18. All sessions are beneficial to municipal officials and staff. I look forward to meeting Illinois municipal officials and staff attending these working sessions. •
