Gov. Thompson:
One Citizen/One Tree

By MARY B. BUSHNELL

Governor James R. Thompson has endorsed, as part of his budget proposal for FY 1991, a massive reforestation project in Illinois. The program goal is one citizen/one tree, or 11 million new trees, to be planted in, growing in and protected in Illinois during the next fiscal year. Trees will provide increased wildlife habitat, energy conservation, soil erosion control, economic development and a host of other benefits.

The Department of Conservation is charged with the responsibility for the program. I have joined the Department to build the public/private partnership needed to accomplish Governor Thompson's goal.

My first step is to organize an advisory board to suggest policy to the Department and develop the detailed planning necessary to implement a successful program. The board will have honorary members, a working committee and two subcommittees. One subcommittee will be made up of representatives of manufacturing firms and the other will be members from public utilities.

The working committee will have the opportunity to shape the program at the beginning, even to naming it and approving a logo.

The Governor needs your help and I need your help. Please accept our invitation to become a member of the working committee. It is important to us and to the program to have your expertise and the gift of your time.

The first meeting will be in May. You will be notified on time and location at a later date. Please call me at 217/782-2381 or write and say YES to trees for and in Illinois. •
