Schaumburg Promotes Bike To Work Week

On Monday, May 11, Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson and Village Manager George Longmeyer boarded a tandem bike and rode to their offices at the Schaumburg Municipal Center. They hope their example will encourage others in Schaumburg to consider using the bicycle to get to work.

Larson wanted his actions to speak louder than his words. "It's easy to sit back during National Bike to Work Week and ask people to bike to work," said Larson, an avid bicyclist. "George and I want to show that it's not just other people who should do this. All of us who are able, including Schaumburg's Mayor and Village Manager, should consider riding bikes to work or using other options to the automobile."

"More bicyclists means fewer cars on the road," said Larson, who also cited health and air pollution benefits from riding. Larson said bicycling could be a good choice for many people who live within five miles of work.

Larson and Longmeyer made the 1.6 mile trip during Schaumburg's Monday morning rush hour.

In addition to the Mayor and Village Manager, Schaumburg Transportation Planner Leanne Redden rode her bike from her home in Arlington Heights. •
