A Note From The Editor

Park Programs for Children

It's summertime and, like in the old song, the living is easy, at least for a lot of young people. Despite the ongoing economic slump and the limitations on public agency budgets, summer park programs for children across our state are performing admirably.

In Chicago, as in many cities, kids are re-awakening to the vital opportunities for learning experiences available in the public parks. In mid-June the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Schools teamed up to publicize the gamut of park programming options available to Chicago youth this summer.

"Developing summer activities is half of meeting our responsibility to Chicago youth," said Park District President Richard A. Devine. "The other component is to promote opportunities in the parks well enough so that every student is aware of the countless recreation and educational options available to maximize her or his summer fun and learning experience."

The city agencies coalesced at Mayor Richard M. Daley's request, to produce and distribute a complete schedule of instructional and leisure recreation and cultural activities happening in Chicago's parks this summer.

"We are reaching out to these young people and encouraging them to embrace such diverse pursuits as golf, tennis, baseball, swimming, the fine arts or fun arts," said Chicago Park District Superintendent Robert C. Penn.

More than 300,000 program brochures were distributed through the Chicago Public School system before the school year ended June 19. Two brochures were developed: one describing activities targeted for elementary school students, and a second highlighting programs and events for high school students.

So, in these harsh economic times, while summer won't be "easy" for many, it can and will be better for many children, thanks to the foresight, planning and caring approach of officials of the mayor's office, the Chicago Public Schools, and the Chicago Park District.
