Many of the state's executive agencies have programs designed specifically to assist older citizens. The federal government also has numerous programs for seniors that are available through local offices or that can be reached by phone. This booklet lists these programs along with telephone numbers and a brief description of each.

Workplace Literacy in Illinois: A Private Sector Report, Secretary of State Literacy Office, 431 S. Fourth, Springfield 62701 (Fall 1993), 44pp.

According to responses from 1,340 private-sector employers, more than half of Illinois firms report a need to upgrade their employees' job-related basic skills but less than a quarter have on-site programs for this purpose. This report explains how the study was done and presents findings and recommendations on defining training needs, implementation of workplace literacy programs, funding, educational providers, practices of effective programs and program content.

Affordable Housing and Public Policy: Strategies for Metropolitan Chicago, Center for Urban Research and Policy Studies, University of Chicago, distributed by University of Illinois Press, 54 E. Gregory, Champaign 61820 (1993), 371pp.

This book contains the background papers, commentaries and final report of the third annual Chicago Assembly that was held November 4-5, 1991, in St. Charles. Participants in the assembly included over 90 representatives from government, business, labor, civic groups, community-based organizations, professional groups and academia.

During the past four years about 2,000 residents in the state's 76 nonmetropolitan counties have been surveyed annually. Reports on topics covered in Volume 4 (1993) are: "State Government and Economic Development," "The Quality of Life in Rural Illinois" and "Health Care in Rural Illinois."
