Health Care Expenditures by State: 1980-1991/Highlighting Illinois, Health Care Cost Containment Council, 4500 South Sixth, Suite 215, Springfield 62703 (June 1994, Technical Report 94-02), 39 pp.

The Illinois Health Care Cost Containment Council was created by the General Assembly in 1984 for the purpose of creating a uniform system for collecting, analyzing, and distributing health care cost and utilization data. Its 11 members represent consumers, insurance companies, providers and businesses. This report consists almost entirely of tables presenting data in four categories: expenditures (e.g., hospital, physician and prescription drug expenditures by region and state), utilization (e.g., number of hospital admissions in community hospitals per 1,000 population), providers (e.g., number of community hospitals) and population/economic measures (e.g., resident population totals and age groups as a percent of total).

Some data highlights are presented at the outset, and an appendix contains a statement on background, definitions, data sources and methods, strengths and limitations.

Illinois Generations: A Traveler's Guide to African American Heritage, R.J. Dale Advertising & Public Relations in Chicago (February 1994), 37 pp.; single free copies may be obtained by calling 1-800-727- 0630, extension 3.

This wonderfully informative booklet, which is drawing attention from all across the state as well as from elsewhere in the country, lists historic sites in Illinois black history. To assist the traveler, the guide divides the state into geographic regions. The guide's editor knows there are many other sites that could be included and hopes people will submit additional suggestions for a second edition.
