Chicago Hosts Opening Game of World Cup

The World Cup, the largest single-sport event in the world, kicks off for the first time in history in the United States. Nine U.S. communities (including Chicago) play host to 52 games over a one-month period, with one team prevailing as World Cup champion. A projected television audience of 32 billion from over 168 countries is expected to watch World Cup USA '94.

According to the world Cup Organizing Committee, "the U.S. Department of Commerce and World Cup USA estimate that as many as one million international visitors will travel to the United States in conjunction with the World Cup, making the event one of the most significant tourist attractions in American history." The same source also reports that, "the 1994 World Cup economic impact could conservatively exceed four billion dollars in the United States." World Cup represents the opportunity of a lifetime for any company that strives to be global. Chicago is proudly hosting the Opening Ceremonies and Opening Game on June 17,1994, featuring World Cup defending champion Germany (Germany v. Bolivia). A large quantity of tourists, approximately 400,000, are expected to converge in the Windy City and give a 230 million dollar boost to the local economy, according to a study performed by two professors from the University of Southern California's department of economics.

Alan Rothenberg is heading World Cup USA 1994 in his capacity as Chairman, President and CEO of the Organizing Committee. On behalf of the World Cup Organizing Committee, a "Chairman's Opening Night Gala" will take place on the evening of the Opening Ceremonies and Game, June 17, 1994, at Chicago's renowned waterfront ballroom. Navy Pier. Guests will be dazzled by the Gala's re-creation of the nine venue cities in surreal setting of performing artists, mesmerizing costumes, acrobatics and other fantasy presentations. Liza Minnelli is the headline entertainer.

A number of tour packages are also being offered as additional attractions to the World Cup. Participants can enjoy the "Chicago '94 Soccer Cruise Series" aboard Chicago's famous yacht, Odyssey II, on Lake Michigan. The "St. Louis Baseball/ World Cup Soccer Tour Package" provides an opportunity to attend the St. Louis Cardinals v. Chicago Cubs baseball game at Wrigley Field, two World Cup soccer games at Soldier Field, and Venetian Night Festival. The best in soccer meets the finest in golf during the "World Cup USA '94 Golf Events." Golf events will take place at the Medinah Country Club's Course No. 3, just outside of Chicago, and other equally prestigious courses nationwide.

Statistics indicate that, "the World Cup is the most sought-after sports trophy in the world. " Moreover, soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Soccer is coming to the United States in a series of 52 World Cup Games. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
