MOTOR FUEL TAX FUNDS
By WILLIAM T. SUNLEY, Engineer of Local Roads and Streets

Gallons of motor fuel consumed on Illinois highways for the first nine months of calendar year 1994 were about the same compared to the first nine months of 1993. Total vehicle miles of travel for the first nine months of 1994 are also 2.2 percent higher than 1993 travel for that same time period. These close corresponding figures indicate that the influx of more fuel efficient vehicles has somewhat stabilized. From now on, it is anticipated that changes in motor fuel tax allotments to local governments each year will remain essentially constant and will directly vary only with the sale of motor fuel tax each year.

Motor fuel tax revenue increased slightly during all of 1994 due to increased motor fuel consumption during the last quarter. Gross collections which included $57,964.66 of sales tax revenue, were 4.60% above calendar year 1993. Sales tax revenue was 35 percent lower than last year simply due to the delay of transfers for the four months of August, September, October, and November. Actual revenue from the sale of motor fuel was up 7.89 percent above last year.

The chart below shows Illinois motor fuel tax revenues that were distributed in calendar year 1994. Municipalities received $22.16 per person, up from $21.57 last year. Road Districts received $978.40 per mile, up from $946.93. Counties received their allotments on the basis of registered license fees for the previous year.

Each month your motor fuel tax allotment varies directly with the total monthly motor fuel tax collection (including the sales tax) which is deposited in the State Treasury. Should you have questions concerning your motor fuel tax allotment or should you not receive your monthly allotment by the end of the following month, please call Patricia Marr in the Bureau of Local Roads and Streets in Springfield at (217) 782-1662.
