BIOGRAPHIES

Larry T. Balsamo, professor of history at Western Illinois University, earned the Ph.D. in history from the University of Missouri. His teaching specialties are the Civil War and Reconstruction and the history of the South. He has published in The History Teacher, Journal of Mississippi History, North Carolina Historical Review, and Civil War History. Since 1975 he has chaired Western Illinois University's annual history conference. In 1990 he was named Distinguished Faculty Lecturer.

Thomas Best teaches seventh grade Social Studies at Central Junior High School in Monmouth, Illinois, and part-time at Monmouth College and Carl Sandburg College. He earned an M.A. in history at Western Illinois University in 1991. He has developed primary source programs and activities for the study of the Civil War, the Oregon Trail, architectural history, and pioneer cemeteries.

William L. Burton is professor emeritus of history at Western Illinois University in Macomb and former chair of the Department of History. He is the author of Melting Pot Soldiers: The Union's Ethnic Regiments and Illinois: A Student's History of the Prairie State.

Thomas G. Conway, professor of history at Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, is a lifelong resident of Illinois who teaches Illinois history at The Grove, a national historic landmark in Glenview. He has long served on The Grove board of directors and as a docent.

Theodore J. Karamanski is a professor of history at Loyola University, Chicago. He is a specialist in public history and has worked on a wide variety of exhibits, videos, and historic preservation reports. His books include: Fur Trade and Exploration (1983), Deep Woods Frontier (1989), Ethics and Public History (1990), and most recently Rally 'Round the Flag: Chicago and the Civil War (1993).

Raymond Krey is the principal of Bushnell Prairie City Junior High School. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in history. He has been a Civil War reenactor for twelve years. He often brings his hobby into the classroom for his eighth grade students.

Patricia Ann Owens teaches history at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She earned M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, an M.A. from the University of Wyoming, and a B.A. from Illinois State University.

David Pasquini was a social studies instructional supervisor at Glenbrook South High School, in Glenview, Illinois. He was a Civil War reenactor and taught a high school course about the Civil War. He passed away in October 1996 while this publication was in press.

Howard J. Romanek received an M.A. in history from Northern Illinois University. He taught history at Geneva High School in Geneva, Illinois, from 1969 to 1971. Since 1971 he has been at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, Illinois.

Paula Seifert teaches social studies courses at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois. She has collaborated with the Problem Based Learning Institute in developing social studies curriculum and with Project LINCOLN instructors in bringing technology into the high school social studies classroom.

Robert W. Sterling, associate professor of history at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, teaches Civil War history and general U.S. history courses.
