Sugar Maples in fall splendor form a sub-canopy for this magnificent red oak. The photograph, shot by Brook McDonald of The Conservation Foundation, was used to illustrate promotional pieces for the DuPage County Forest Preserve's successful 1997 referendum. The campaign committee, "Neighbors for Open Space," was comprised largely of citizen volunteers who palyed an integral role in the success of this landmark referendum, securing $75 million for open space in Illinois' burgeoning DuPage County.
