Antler Theories
For centuries, antlers have been a symbol of success.

BY BRENDA POTTS

Could man's fascination with deer antlers actually have started a war? I'm not talking about a turf war between two hunters, I'm referring to something bigger, such as the French Revolution.

One theory claims European nobles believed deer with massive antlers were expressions of the quality of their land. From the 14th to 16th centuries, these nobles supposedly became so obsessed with antlers that they led hunting parties on horseback following hounds in pursuit of deer with exceptional antlers. This sport, which resulted in the trampling of peasant vineyards, crops and orchards, led to the disruption of social order. A Peasant War began in 1524, spawning 300 years worth of disputes that eventually led to the French Revolution. At least, that is the theory.

We once measured success by the weight of the game bag. Today, a deer's antlers may signify success in a different manner. A testament to one's skill as a hunter could be the harvesting of a challenging mature buck, which may also carry the largest rack. Many hunters describe their trophy deer mount as a form of homage to the magnificence of this species. No matter what theory you choose to support, there is no doubt, antlers are one of nature's wonders.

The term, "antler" comes from the Latin word, "anteoculae," which means, "in front of the eyes." Bucks drop these appendages at the end of each breeding season. In the spring, they redevelop with a covering of fuzzy, dense, fine hair, commonly called velvet. By fall, the velvet is shed, and the antler is fully regrown and hardened.

There are a number of theories about the medicinal qualities of velvet. A 2,000-year-old scroll found in China recommends antler velvet in the treatment of 52 different diseases. Theories on the virtues of antler velvet include its use to cure a number of ailments. It is touted to improve immune system function, athletic performance and muscle recovery; reduce negative side effects of stress; promote rapid recovery from illness; and enhance libido. In fact, the theories on its effectiveness are the subject of much research and the foundation of a large industry based upon the harvest of antler velvet.

Jerry Whitmire's deer, ranked tops in the firearms-typical category, was harvested in Mercer County and scored 192 7/8.

One trip to an Internet search engine with the words "deer, antler, genetics" brought up 1,150 sites to explore. Age, nutrition, genetics, disease and injuries are commonly referred to as contributing factors in the development of a buck's antlers. All sorts of theories abound regarding the best way to produce the biggest set of antlers.

One site asks hunters, "How would you like to harvest a trophy buck?" It gives a few ideas that might prove successful.

For example, one idea suggests hunters practice quality deer management (QDM) on their own hunting land. This is a popular concept across America, with the theory being "don't shoot young bucks." Young bucks put their energy into body growth, while mature bucks put their energy into antler growth. QDM research also includes theories on harvesting does, providing supplemental nutrition and the inheritance of specific antler traits.

Other ideas include my personal favorites: go to where the big bucks are and get lucky!

Brenda Potts, herself an avid deer hunter, is constituency liaison for DNR's Office of Legislation and Constituency Services, which oversees the Big Buck Recognition Program. For more information on the program, call (217) 782-4963.

To locate big antlered bucks, find a state with excellent herd management, plenty of food, good habitat and great genetics. Sounds like Illinois big buck hunting at its finest.

Hunters listed in the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Big Buck Recognition Program (BBRP) were lucky enough to harvest a deer capable of qualifying for the record book. To make it into the BBRP, the deer must meet criteria based upon the Boone and Crockett scoring system.

Deer taken by firearm must score a minimum of 140 for a typical rack and 160 for a non-typical set of antlers. The minimum for deer taken by crossbow or bow and arrow is 115 for typical and 130 for non-typical antlers. All racks must be scored by certified measurers. The following is a list of entries received during the 2001 calendar year:
