Lincoln at Richmond

"Finally, Lincoln is back in Richmond," said Robert Kline, Chairman, U.S. Historical Society. Tlie occasion was this Statue commemorating the visit of Abraham Lincoln and his son Tad to Richmond in April 1865, just after the city was abandoned by the Confederacy. The statue was donated by the U.S. Historical Society and installed at the Richmond

National Battlefield Park Civil War Visitor Center on April 5, 2003, as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. But not everyone in the former Confederate capitol viewed the statue in the same light. According to the March-April 2003 issue of The Lincolnian, bimonthly newsletter of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia, opponents to the statue referred to Lincoln as a "monstrous criminal" and likened its placement to "installing a bin Laden statue at the World Trade Center." Others called for contributions to erect "a statue of John Wilkes Booth in front of the Lincoln Memorial." Chairman Kline waxed philosophical: "It may take a generation of so, but this will calm down and we'll unify."

Call for Centennial businesses

Since the program's inception in 1985, more than 1,000 businesses have been honored. Award recipients receive statewide publicity, a commemorative plaque inscribed with the governor's signature, a one-year complimentary membership in the ISHS, and use of the Centennial Awards logo. In addition, Centennial Award winners will be recognized at the annual Centennial Awards Banquet, to be held in October. The deadline to apply for a 2003 Centennial Award is Friday, August 15.
