OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
CITY OF CHICAGO
January 22, 2004

RICHARD M. DALEY
Mayor

GREETINGS

As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I extend warmest greetings to all those attending the Illinois Association of Park Districts/Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IAPD/IPRA) Conference.

IAPD and IPRA work together to preserve and maintain park districts, forest preserves and recreational facilities. They strive to provide recreation opportunities and improve the quality of life for all Illinois residents. Together, these organizations are a powerful advocate, initiating research, influencing governmental decisions and educating members and citizens to promote recognition of the benefits of park districts.

While you are here, I hope you will take time to discover all that makes Chicago a great place to live and visit. I know you will like what you find. From our great architecture and beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, our exciting nightlife and many world-renowned cultural institutions, Chicago offers something for everyone.

Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable event.

Sincerely,

Richard M. Daley
Mayor

CHAIRMANS' MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

Let the celebration... continue! That's right. The Illinois Association of Park Districts' 75th anniversary year may have ended, but the 2004 conference gives all of us another opportunity to keep celebrating as the Illinois Park and Recreation Association launches its 60th year of service to members from all walks of our growingly diverse profession.

You'll have an opportunity to see and hear all about IPRA's six decades of hard work and innovation as the year progresses. For now, let's all focus on the extraordinary opportunities that await you from the moment you arrive at the conference.

As always, there is more to do than time permits. Catch up with old friends. Learn new ways to do your job more effectively at lively, insightful workshops. Stroll the exhibit hall, which will be packed with a wide variety of commercial opportunities. Make this the year you find all of the resources you need in one place.

Don't forget to have fun. That may sound like a silly statement, but frankly, we're often too busy making sure everyone else is having a good time to take care of our own needs. Conference is your chance to recharge your batteries and grab your share of relaxation.

Speaking of charged batteries, this year's dynamic conference duo deserves a big helping of congratulations for the daunting (and often thankless) job of chairing this annual event. Sue Micklevitz and Wally Frasier pulled out all stops to make sure Conference 2004 surpassed everything we've done before. Both have been as generous with their time as they have been with their talent. Thank you Sue and Wally.

No conference could become as successful as ours without the remarkable contributions made by our volunteers. We wish we had room to name you all and hope you know and understand the gratitude we feel for all you have done. That said, it's time find out why there's no business like our business as you begin your conference experience. We'll help make 2004 a year you'll never forget. Guaranteed!

WHAT'S A CPRP?

CPRP stands for Certified Park and Recreation Professional, APRP stands for Associate Park and Recreation Professional, PPRP stands for Provisional Park and Recreation Professional and CTRS stands for Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. CPRP, APRP, PPRP or CTRS status is bestowed upon park and recreation professionals who can demonstrate through education, experience and current practice that they meet and exhibit certain predetermined qualifications. If you are interested in the certification program, contact IPRA at (630) 752-0141.

DO I NEED CEUs?

CEUs are offered for several conference workshops. CEU stands for Continuing Education Unit. The CEU is a form of measurement to record time spent furthering one's education. Attainment of CEUs is a requirement for many certification programs, including the APRP, CPRP, and PPRP programs in the recreation profession. If you are not certified in some manner, CEUs are not necessary as they will not be recorded or tracked by any organization.
