The 2007 Illinois Parks & Recreation Magazine Award Winners

Our annual photo contest just keeps getting bigger. The IP&R 2007 "Give Us Your Best Shot" Photo Contest drew more than 200 exceptional entries from shutterbugs at park districts, forest preserves, conservation, recreation and special recreation agencies all across the state. As you can imagine, these images depicted the wide range of activities and the beautiful vistas offered by Illinois agencies. The most successful pictures - Michael Paradise's "Her Winning Spirit," for example - also captured the moments in which the emotions of participants were just too big to contain.

The judges for our annual writing awards focused not only on the quality of articles published in 2007, but also on their utility. There was found no shortage of stories worthy of winning an IP&R Writing Award. But the judges were, finally, able to make some tough decisions and bestow awards in five writing categories.

I'm glad that we honor photographers and contributors, but I am even more glad that those of you who contribute to IP&R seem to do so without ever thinking of collecting a little piece of crystal for the mantel. You contribute because, through your words or your images, you've got something to say about how park, recreation, conservation or special recreation agencies touch people's lives or about how they can be made to work even better than they already do. I believe it's that altruistic intention that makes your contributions to this magazine so fine and so useful.

That's why I want to thank all of you who read and contribute to IP&R. Your willingness to share your knowledge and your joy is the stuff that makes up your winning spirit.

Pass it on.
