Donald R. Jessen, president of the Addison Park District Board of Commissioners, spent the week of October 31 through November 5 as a member of a three-person National Recreation and Park Association-appointed team of representatives to Japan as part of a program to exchange ideas on park and recreation management.

Members of the National Recreation Association of Japan attended the annual National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Congress in Indianapolis in September. Jessen's visit was a follow up to that. "We have a great exchange program; they are able to send professionals to our national congress, and we do the same. It is a great way to share ideas, develop international partnerships and form new friendships," said Jessen.

Before leaving, Jessen collected a variety of gifts from the Village of Addison, the Addison Library, the Addison Park District and the IAPD as a way to showcase the work of those agencies.

Jessen has been an active member of IAPD and NRPA for more than 25 years.

Rockford Park District Landscape Architect Michael Pauly died Saturday, November 10, 2007 after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident. Pauly designed more than 70 neighborhood playgrounds in his nearly 12 years at the district.

Tim Dimke, executive director of the Rockford Park District, called Pauly "a sensitive person who always thought of others. He was very creative and imaginative, a guy we are going to miss deeply."

Pauly spent part of the morning he died working on a new playground in southwest Rockford.

"Mike was very dedicated to his work. He loved what he did," said Jim Reid, the district's deputy director of capital planning. "How many times do any of us have the chance to love what we do for a living?"

"Mike was really a kid at heart himself and liked to have fun," Dimke said, "and it came out in his work. He understood kids and play and the value of it."

IAPD General Counsel Peter Murphy
show off the Governor's Home Town Award,
which Barrington earned for its efforts to create
a fully accessible tree house.

These awards are given to people across the state who have worked to improve the communities in which they live. Forty projects were recognized at a ceremony in Springfield in November.

Barrington was honored for the construction of the Pepper Family Accessible Treehouse. The structure features 200 feet of winding ramps leading to two open-air decks, a gazebo and an enclosed cabin with electricity. The 2,000-square-foot facility is perfect for star gazing, birthday parties and other imaginative programming.

The project was underwritten by a $230,000 challenge grant from the Pepper Family Foundation of Barrington. The Northern Illinois Special Recreation Foundation and the Barrington Park District worked hand in hand to raise more than $475,000 to fund this project.

In a written release announcing the winners, a spokesperson for the governor's office said "the Pepper Family Treehouse and this community will be a benchmark for future projects relying on volunteers."

Frankfort Sculptures Honor Mayor and Congressman

The Frankfort Preservation Foundation recently dedicated two busts in honor of public servants at the Frankfort Park District's Preservation Park sculpture garden.

The sculptures recognized the careers of former Frankfort Mayor George C. Sangmeister and his son, retired Congressman George E. Sangmeister. The congressman spoke before the dedication of his father's bust, but was unaware until after the first unveiling that the foundation was recognizing him as well.

The ceremony was one of the last public events Congressman Sangmeister attended before he passed away on October 7, 2007.

At the May 2007 dedication ceremony, various dignitaries who worked with the retired congressman paid tribute to him. Speakers included State Senator A.J. Wilhelmi, State Representative Renee Kosel, Will County Executive Larry Walsh, Congressman William Lipinski and Director of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Roseann Santore.

Sculptor Dante DiBartolo of Friends for Community Public Art in Joliet designed both busts. The sculptures of Congressman Sangmeister and his father, the former mayor, sit in the southwest corner of the Preservation Park Sculpture Garden at the Frankfort Park District Founders Center.

Fox Valley Granted Funds for Bike Trail

ipr010839134-7.jpg

A gap in the Fox River Trail that waylays bicyclists in downtown Aurora is another step closer to being filled with the announcement that the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) has approved the Fox Valley Park District's request for a $600,000 grant for trail engineering and construction.

CMAP announced the selections for fiscal year 2008 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) grants in December.

Jeff Palmquist, director of planning, development and grants for the park district, said work on the project should begin in 2008.

The park district, City of Aurora and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County have agreed to share in the $1.7 million cost of constructing sections of the trail gap that are not being funded through state grants.

In 1995, the forest preserve district was awarded a $583,000 Illinois Transportation Enhancements Program (ITEP) grant for engineering and partial construction of the trail from the park district's Virgil Gilman Trail to the south end of the city of Aurora's proposed Fox Walk, but the trails do not connect, and currently bicyclists must pedal through traffic in downtown Aurora. The Aurora gap is the major break that remains in the Fox River Bicycle Trail that runs from Oswego to Wisconsin.
