Around the State

The City Council of Danville has authorized Fred Misch, Commissioner of public parks and property, to purchase the Danville stadium for $25,000. The stadium was previously used for organized baseball . . . Joliet continues to push for its port authority. Mayor James P. Hennessy and the council recently authorized city manager Chester B. Lewis and corporation council Paul Brumund to negotiate a survey of present and future needs in terminal facilities with Creffenhagen and Associates . . . Morton has recently dedicated its new $70,000 tire department building . . . 805 Illinois cities, villages and towns have adopted the municipal sales tax . . . Seven Illinois Cities with a population of over 5000 have received honors from the National Safety Council. All of them went through the year 1955 without a traffic fatality. The Cities are: Canton, Dixon, Monmouth, Creve Coeur, Peoria Heights, Pontiac and Princeton .. . Ottawa citizens by a 2-1 vote have approved the purchase of the old LaSalle county fairgrounds. Purchase price for the 17 acre tract is $40,000 . . . Robert Morris, village manager of Glencoe, was a speaker at the recent convention of the Minnesota Municipal League . . .

Bond Issues Approved

Murphysboro, an $80,000 general obligation issue to construct a new City Hall. Total cost of the building is estimated at $130,000. Mayor Joe Williams and the council expect to have $50,000 in sales tax revenue on hand to commence construction this summer, the remaining bonds will pay out in seven years, using sales tax revenues. The referendum carried by a two to one majority . . . Herrin voters approved by a majority of over 1 to 1 the issuance of $627,000 in revenue bonds to improve the water and sewerage systems. Also included in the referendum was the refunding of $305,000 in outstanding bonds against the two systems . . . Farmer City, $125,000 in general obligation bonds to finance a sewer system and disposal plant, $75,000 in revenue bonds will be issued to complete the project . . . Paxton, $110,000 in water revenue bonds to dig a new well . . . Dixon, $1,000,000 in revenue bonds to purchase the Dixon Water System and improvements thereto . . . Stonefort, $28,000 in general obligation bonds to help finance a $128,000 water system . . . Barrington voters have approved issuance of $60,000 in bonds to finance a library building . . . Henry, $28,000 in bonds for improvements . . . Mattoon, $1,300,000 in water revenue bonds for construction of a new reservoir. Pinckneyville, a $485,000 revenue bond issue for a municipal gas system was approved by overwhelmingly by the voters.

Bond Issues Rejected

Ladd, a $62,000 G. A. issue to black top village streets was defeated by a vote of three to one . . . Peoria, voters have rejected the proposed East Bluff Storm Sewer project. Project cost was estimated at $2,000,000.

Edward Swanson and Duain Johnson have been named as trustees to fill vacancies on the Woodhull board . . . Mrs. Earl Kellington to be village treasurer of Kenney . . . James B. Young elected mayor of Galva . . . Arch Whitlock to be assistant city manager at Mt. Vernon . . . Le Roy See appointed city clerk at Salem . . . Paul O. Williamson, appointed city clerk at Lincoln.

Honored

S. T. Anderson, superintendent, Springfield Water and Light Department was elected executive vice president of the American Public Power Association at the recent convention in Los Angeles . . . Ray V. Tilley, a member of the firm of Crawford, Murphy and Tilly, consulting engineers of Springfield, has been appointed by Governor William G. Stratton to be a member of the professional engineers examining committee. His appointment expires in 1958.
