CITY HALL GOSSIP

The North Side Business Men's Club of Quincy has circulated petitions urging the City Council to increase the salary of the Mayor to $13,000 per year. The present salary is $6,000 . . . Illinois, which has furnished more winners of All American City Awards than any other State, has three entries in the finals for 1956. Springfield, Elgin and Park Ridge are among the 22 finalist cities . . . Highland Park recently opened a new off-street parking lot . . . Voters in Loves Park have overwhelmingly approved a civil service system for the city . . . In recent referenda: voters in Aurora rejected a change to the council-manager form of government; residents of Villa Park have adopted the manager form . . . Batavia reports that 97 elms have been lost to the Dutch elm tree disease . . . Fire Chief Wayne E. Swanson of Rockford has been elected President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs . . . Several Illinois municipalities have reported the results of their programs to get out the vote. Westchester, 94% of the registered voters; Highland Park, 93.9%; Paxton, 89.3%; Gibson City, 89.2% . . . Bloomington voters have rejected a proposition to levy a special tax for construction of a swimming pool . . . City Engineer James F. Moring of Evanston reports that more than 4.4 lineal miles of broken and hazardous sidewalks were replaced this year. In addition, a total of 2,350 lineal feet of curb was replaced. The total cost of this program is approximately $80,600 with property owners directly paying about $35,000; the City of Evanston about $45,600.

Bond Issues Approved

Ridgefarm voters have approved a $70,000 issue for construction of a sewage system and a disposal plant . . . Warsaw $100,000 in water and sewer revenue bonds for improvements to their water and sewer systems . . . Evanston voters approved by better than 2 to 1 vote, a $1,200,000 bond issue for shore protection and beach improvements (Lake Michigan). The issue provides $807,368 for shore protection, $132,882 for sanitary facilities in connection with beaches and $259,750 for property acquisitions. The protection program will be carried out in cooperation with the Federal government which will pay an additional $403,684 toward the program . . . Hanover $48,000 issue to drill a new well and new mains . . . Pawnee voters have approved a $270,000 issue in revenue bonds for natural gas service . . . O'Fallon a $125,000 revenue issue to expand the sewage system, was approved by a 3 to 1 margin.

Bond Issue Defeated

Aurora voters rejected a $1,000,000 general obligation issue for new bridge constructions.

Resignations

H. Dyer Bent as City Collector of Evanston. Mr. Bent will continue with the city on a part-time basis in charge of special assessments . . . Gus Shalk as Fire Chief of Champaign.

Appointments

W. E. Murphy, assistant marshal, Evanston, fire department, has been appointed by Governor Stratton to the post of Deputy State Fire Marshal. Murphy served on the Evanston department for 29 years . . . Waynesville, E. A. Organ has been appointed to the village board . . . Alfred Rickert as police chief at Naperville after 29 years of service . . . Hobart Kruse as Chief of the Champaign fire department . . . Wayne F. Anderson to become Evanston's first finance director-comptroller.

Deaths

Roy F. Henderson, Alderman, Pana . . . Frank S. Lange, Building Commissioner, Forest Park. Mr. Lange served the Village for 22 years . . . Laverne Woodard, City Clerk, Batavia. Mr. Woodard was first elected to the office of City Clerk in the year 1919 and continued in such capacity continually until his death on September 32, 1956.
