CITY HALL GOSSIP

Around the State Paul Opperman has been named Executive Director of the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. The Commission, established by the last session of the General Assembly, will act as a clearing house for local planning agencies in Cook, Lake, DuPage, Mc-Henry, Kane and Will counties. Mr. Opperman was formerly planning director at San Francisco. . . . Mayor Paul Taylor of Effingham conducts a weekly fifteen minute program over a local radio station keeping the people posted on city matters. ... Mayor Robert Sabonjian of Waukegan recently appeared on a nation wide TV program honoring comedian Jack Benny. Benny, a native of Waukegan, was presented a plaque, by the Mayor, naming him Waukegan's outstanding citizen of 1958. . . . The Village of St. Marie recently became the 1,000th municipality to adopt the sales tax.

Resignations and Appointments Ralph B. Johnson, former Mayor of Galesburg and a Past President of the Illinois Municipal League, has been named Administrator of the Illinois Veterans Commission by Governor Stratton . . . Ray Davis has been elected alderman at Marengo . . . Gaylord Powell has been appointed Village Treasurer at Cahokia . . . Gibson City at a special election, Wayne A. O'Neal was named alderman . . . Alan N. Buck, Highway superintendent and Zoning Administrator at Decatur, has resigned . . . Arthur P. Girard has been named Building Inspector at Decatur . . . Commissioner P. B. Hutton of Charleston has resigned.

Bond Issues

Springfield has awarded a contract to purchase $6,600,000 worth of sewer revenue bonds at a net rate of 3.532+ . . . Bloomington, the City Council has approved a $660,000 issue to expand its electric utility.
