Around the State

Representatives of Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur and Effingham recently met and drafted a model ordinance to control and regulate the use of marginal land around municipal lakes and the use of water for purposes other than water supply . . . The City of Chicago recently celebrated its 121st birthday anniversary . . . Mayor Ralph Richmond of St. Charles has accepted in the name of the city a gift of $100,000 to be used for any item of civic progress the city officials deem necessary. The money was given to the city by local philanthropist Col. E. J. Baker . . . Cook County's new incorporation is Buffalo Grove . . . Murphysboro has received a $184,000 federal grant for their sewer program . . . Mayor Benjamin T. Schleicher of Rockford has been named to the United States Conference of Mayors Committee on natural gas legislation . . . Peru's six-month moratorium of parking meters has ended and the City Council has voted to restore the meters to their posts . . . The City of Mt. Sterling recently polled its water users on the question of fluoridation of the water supply. Of 890 water customers 606 returned the questionnaire, of those answering 397 were opposed to fluoridation while 309 favored it ... Named as one of the "Ten Young Women of the Year" is the daughter of Village Clerk Michael Laraia of Melrose Park. The young lady is known professionally on Broadway as Carol Lawrence. She is currently appearing as a star of the Broadway hit "West Side Story."

Appointments and Resignations

Robert H. Oldland, former manager of Santa Maria, California, has been appointed City Manager of Champaign . . . Race N. Wilt, former assistant city engineer at Wilmette, has been appointed city manager at Coronado, California . . . Lee Morse has been elected to the city commission at Harris-burg . . . Ernest Erickson has become Grayslake's first Village Superintendent, as such he will be responsible for police, streets, sewers and water services . . . Alderman Frank D. Sperry of Galva has resigned . . . Robert L. Hegel has been appointed City Manager at Villa Park . . . Hugh T. Henry, former manager at Lombard and assistant manager at Glencoe, has been named City Manager of Claremore, Oklahoma . . . Lawrence Harry has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late E. C. Helton, as trustee at Ogden . . . Dan Hanson, traffic engineer at Peoria, has resigned to accept the post of traffic engineer of St. Louis County.

Bond Issues

Lockport, a $425,000 general obligation bond issue for a sewage disposal plant was approved at referendum by a vote of 661 to 70 ... Dolton, $510,000 combination bond issue for a fire station and water improvements have been approved . . . East Moline voters have rejected a proposed bond issue of $175,000 to construct a new city hall. The vote was 541 opposed to 433 in favor of the issue.

J. E. McMackin of Salem, a former member of the General Assembly and former Mayor . . . James K. Bamett, chief of police at Clinton . . . Mrs. Katherine Shade, the mother of former Pekin Mayor and now State Representative Norman J. Shade.
