Around The State

Final plans for the installation of dial phones have been made in Greenfield . . . Natural gas will become a reality in four more communities in Illinois: Divernon, Pawnee, Edinburg and Franklin . . . Mayor Nelson Howarth, Springfield, addressed a meeting of the High Twelve on "Modern Municipal Problems." . . . Benid has started construction on a sanitary sewer system . . .. Parking meters are back in use in Newton. The meters could not be used during a street widening project on two sides of the town square ... A site costing $50,000 is being purchased by the Taylorville city council for development of an off-street parking lot. It will be purchased with proceeds from bonds to be repaid with parking meter revenues . . . Farmer City has purchased two lots, which will be developed into a parking area . . . Finishing touches are being put on the swimming pool which will be ready for opening Memorial Day in Fairbury. Swim stars from the University of Illinois will stage an exhibition opening day . . . East Moline, population 13,913, received approximately $97,000 in municipal utility tax receipts for the past 12 months. This is roughly a $10,000 increase over the previous year . . . Mendota city council has awarded $402,265 in water improvement contracts . . . Washington voters defeated a referendum 968 to 554, to fluoridate the water supply ... Mayor Morgan P. Phipps continues to lead a group of Mattoon officials in tours of other Illinois cities. The purpose of the trips is to observe municipal practices and procedures. The Mattoon officials have visited Pekin and Danville to date . . . Kewanee has placed its policemen on a 40-hour work week. The police had been on a 46-hour work week. ... A proposition to incorporate the community of Newport in Lake County was defeated by a vote of 63 to 24 . . . Rockford's report from the Police and Fire Commission indicates 94 of the city's 135 firemen worked a total of 4,586 hours during March at part-time jobs . . . Morrison adopted a forestry tax, at a referendum held April 15th.

Bond Issues

Monticello—Voters overwhelmingly approved two bond issues: $280,000 issue to improve the water system, and $20,000 issue to construct a new municipal building . . . Orion—Voters approved a $175,000 general obligation bond issue for construction of sanitary sewers, by a margin of 292 to 45. The project is expected to cost about $350,000; with the remainder of the money to be raised through revenue bonds . . . Marion—$335,000 issue for swimming pool construction, approved by the voters . . . Roodhouse—$100,000 sewer bond issue for completion of city's sewer system started over 30 years ago.
