May Drive-in

This session "Mini Bikes" attracted considerable interest.

The May Drive-in Seminar held at Pheasant Run Lodge, St. Charles, Illinois, on Saturday, May 13, 1972, was attended by 170 delegates representing 55 park districts throughout Illinois.

Director Henry N. Barkhausen, Department of Conservation, was the luncheon speaker and William Blaser, Director, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, was the headliner on the panel concerned with environmental problems.

The afternoon session on legislation and legal matters was chaired by Robert A. Stuart, General Counsel for the Association, and State Representative Eugenia S. Chapman and Robert Hoffman participated as members of the Illinois General Assembly. Carl F. Fuerst, former Regional Director of the National Recreation and Park Association, presented information on the status of pending federal legislation.

Each session was well-attended and those that actively participated gained much useful knowledge and assisted in making the overall meeting a success.

Edward Hauser, Commissioner from Elk Grove Village, was Chairman and was assisted by Barry Loman, Commissioner Granite City, Illinois, as Co-Chairman. Mrs. Spencer (Betty) Irons presided at the luncheon and introduced Director Barkhausen.

In addition, the following committees of the Illinois Association of Park Districts conducted hearings:

By-Laws — Ray Lindblad, Commissioner, Joliet Park District, Chairman
Higher Education—Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Williams, President, Olympia Fields Park District, Chairman
Publications—Glen D. Stewart, Commissioner, Oak Park Park District, Chairman
Membership — Michael Cassidy, Commissioner, Freeport Park District, Chairman

Seminars & Regional Meetings— Edward R. Hauser, Commissioner, Elk Grove Park District and Barry Loman, Commissioner, Granite City Park District, Co-Chairmen

For the first time at the seminar delegates were very fortunate in having several outdoor exhibitors which provided an opportunity to see demonstrations of various types of equipment that are utilized by park districts.

From comments at the seminar and those received in the office, it was a very informative and useful meeting.

A similar one-day workshop is being planned for southern Illinois later this summer.
