New Position


Maxwell R. Garret

After 27 years as a member of the staff of the University of Illinois, Maxwell R. Garret, Associate Professor of Recreation and Park Administration and Fencing Coach, has assumed a similar position at Pennsylvania State University. The appointment was effective September 1st.

An Air Force veteran, who rose from the rank of private to Captain, has a long and impressive record while serving the University of Illinois including:

Past President of the National Fencing Coaches Association of America; a delegate for the U.S. at the Fifth World Consultation of P. E. for Y.M.C.A.'s, Rome, Italy, 1960; Fencing Coach of the Year, 1962, 1965; a member of Helm's Hall of Fame for fencing; U. S. Olympic Squad Coach, 1960; Visiting professor at Wisconsin State University, Summer, 1968; Director of the Academy for Fencing Teachers, Israel, 1970; Head Fencing Coach for the World University Games, Torino, Italy, 1970; U. S. Head Fencing Coach for the World Championship, Ankora, Turkey, 1970; and U. S. Fencing Coach for the Junior World Fencing Championship, South Bend, Indiana, 1971.

In addition to these honors, Mac was active with the Illinois Park and Recreation Society where he served on numerous committees and was a Registered Recreation Administrator since 1963.

The members of IPRS, its Board and Staff, wishes Mac and his family the very best in his new position at Penn State.

Robert Humke

Robert Humke has been appointed Community Recreation Specialist, Office of Recreation and Park Administration, University of Illinois. The appointment was effective September 1st.

A native of Wisconsin, Humke attended Milwaukee area schools and Ripon (Wisconsin) College. After serving four years in the U. S. Navy, he attended and graduated from Wisconsin State University at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, with majors in recreation and physical education. In 1963, he was employed by the city of Waukesha, Wisconsin, as Recreation Supervisor, and was later appointed assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. He enrolled at Indiana University in the fall of 1966, and completed his master's degree in recreation and park administration in 1967. He was subsequently employed by the Peoria Park District as an Area Recreation Supervisor. Upon the death of Neve Harms in early 1968, he was appointed to the position of Superintendent of Recreation. He served in that capacity until his employment as Community Recreation Specialist.

While in Peoria, Humke was responsible for guiding the expansion of recreation services in almost every program area. He played an important role in the formulation of the Park District's master plan, in various cooperative agreements and programs, and in significantly aiding the public relations and promotion efforts of the district. During his tenure as Superintendent of Recreation the Peoria Park District was awarded The Sports Foundation's Gold Medal Award for excellence in park and recreation management.

Humke served two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors, Illinois Park and Recreation Society, in 1971 and 1972. He has been active in professional committee work in Illinois and has served as a conference panelist and speaker on a state and district level. Bob was active in civic and church affairs while in Peoria. He is married and has three children.

Charles "Chuck" Pezoldt, a native of Des Plaines, Illinois, has assumed a new post in the University of Illinois Department of Recreation and Park Administration. Chuck has began duties as Professional Program Director in charge of undergraduate preparation of recreation majors. In this capacity he will coordinate the efforts of the entire undergraduate faculty and supervise all operations in relation to undergraduate professional courses.

Chuck began his work with the Department in 1968 as Assistant Chief and Community Recreation Specialist, Office of Recreation and Park Resources. He has had considerable experience and background in dealing with urban recreation problems as a consultant of ORPR. His eleven years of successful experience as Director of Parks and Recreation, Des Plaines Park District, will be of great value to the department in developing the professional preparation program. Chuck is also a former sports editor, Des Plaines Suburban Times, and has taught at Northwestern University where he received his Master's degree in 1962. He is a past president, Illinois Parks and Recreation Society, a Certified Recreation Administrator in Illinois, and has received many awards and citations for his professional work.

Chuck has also distinguished himself by completing his academic work and will be awarded the Ph.D. degree at the University of Illinois in October.
