IPRS DIRECTOR RESIGNS

Richard R. Doering

Richard R. Doering, Executive Director of the Illinois Park and Recreation Society and Editor of Illinois Parks and Recreation Magazine has resigned his dual role effective February 1, 1973.

He was appointed to the position in 1965 when the old 300 member Illinois Recreation Association was reorganized into the Illinois Park and Recreation Society. The organization has experienced steady growth since that time with memberships expected to exceed 1,200 this year.

Doering has a background of over 18 years in the field of parks and recreation. His future plans are undecided at this time.

To Come

Information about the new IPRS/IAPD agreement, details about the IPRS office move back to Chicago, and other IPRS changes will be released at a future date to IPRS members.

Student Report

Illinois students made quite a showing at the Conference in November, with more than 300 in attendance. That is possibly more than any other single branch had represented! Thanks to the supporting agencies, professionals, and hard working committee members, students were able to host a lounge over the three day period. Top professionals in Illinois parks and recreation dropped by to meet and chat with students. The Summer Job Mart received over 400 job placements from agencies in Illinois, which were posted during the conference. This will become an annual activity because of the response it received.

In addition to the lounge and the Job Mart, two student organized and student run educational sessions were held: "Student Organizations on Campus" and "Interviewing for Your First Job." Both received sell out crowds.

At the Student Branch Business Meeting held Friday night, the officers and representatives were introduced, and new officers elected: New officers of the Student Branch are: Marilyn Coombs, UI, President; Ed Haag, WIU, President-elect; Darwin Shroyer, UI, Vice-President; Toni Norton, WIU, Secretary; Bob Porter, SIU, Treasurer; Chip Huge, SIU, IAPD Board representative; and John Bruns, Parkland, Parlimentarian.

The Student Branch hopes to serve all the Illinois students in any way possible, and needs the feedback from the students in order to meet these needs. Every officer and representative is readily available to assist any organization or individual who needs help.

Appointment

Robert Bluestone may have become the youngest public official in the state when he was appointed to the Park Board in Franklin Park recently. Bluestone was appointed to fulfill the term of John O'Dowd who had earlier resigned from the Board because of his increased business commitments. The appointment will run until April, when the position of Commissioner is up for election. Bluestone has indicated he plans to run for the seat in the April election.

Bob says he started thinking about being a Park Commissioner quite some time ago, and after O'Dowd's resignation late last summer, he collected a number of signatures of residents on petitions supporting his appointment to the vacancy, and presented them to the Board for consideration. He believes his appointment will add the youth viewpoint to the Board, which will be an asset because while the District serves all ages, it is very much concerned with the youth of the community.

Board President Chris Quinn indicated the entire Board was impressed with Bluestone's interest and enthusiasm, as he has been attending all Park Board meetings since last summer and has familiarized himself with the operations of the Board. Bluestone, a Park & Recreation major at Triton College in River Grove, is president of the Triton Student Council, and in this position attends the Triton College District Board meetings. At his own expense he also attended the National Recreation & Parks Association Congress in Anaheim, California and the Illinois State Parks & Recreation Conference in Chicago this year. Bob intends to pursue a professional career as a Parks & Recreation Administrator after his graduation from college.
