The comptroller's monthly report showed the general funds average daily available balance for March to be $521.7 million; the general funds end-of-month balance was $514.0 million; the combined funds end-of-month balance was $735.0 million .... A 1979 survey of abandoned mines in Illinois conducted by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for the Abandoned Mines Reclamation Council identifies 85 potentially hazardous or environmentally harmful sites. Of that total, 33 were classified as severe public hazards, 26 as moderate and 14 as slight. The other 12 sites were considered environmental problems, with 4 severe, 1 moderate, and 7 slight ecological threats .... 114 motorists died on Illinois highways in March, according to the Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police. During the first three months of 1980, there were 350 traffic deaths, an increase of 16.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 1979 .... For 1978, Illinois was ranked 17th in the amount of state and local taxes on a per capita basis, but was ranked third in total state and local tax revenues collected, according to a study of census bureau data by the Commerce Clearing House. The average Illinois resident in 1978 paid $917 in state and local taxes, up 6.3 percent from the previous year. The average American paid $888 in 1978, an increase of 8.6 percent over 1977. Alaska was highest ($1,871), and Arkansas was lowest ($553). Illinois collected $10.3 billion in state and local tax revenues in 1978, behind the leading two states: California ($27.3 billion) and New York ($23.2 billion).
