Rolling!

by Mary Jane Gauen
Public Information
Evanston Recreation Department

The Evanston Recreation Department has found a way to please roller skaters while serving the city in other ways. Several times during the past two summers, the City has closed off one block of a downtown street to traffic for an afternoon of family roller skating. These "Wheels Are Rolling" events also contributed to the city in other ways.

City officials are using the skating sessions to measure interest in roller skating, since the establishment of a permanent rink has been an issue in Evanston.

"Wheels Are Rolling" involved cooperation between several City departments. The Recreation Department plans, supervises, finances and publicizes the events. The Street Department cleans the streets, and the Traffic Engineering Department erects No Parking signs and covers parking meters. Even civic leaders get into the act by drawing names of skaters and spectators for prizes.

The roller parties, scheduled on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., have proven popular, attracting about 150 skaters and up to 50 bystanders. Participants have ranged in age from 3 to 70 years. Rain dates are set for the following week but luckily have not been necessary.

The setup for the temporary rink is simple. Traffic comes from a circular skating area with pylons also around hazards such as manhole covers. One area is set aside for inexperienced and young skaters. Personnel requirements to ensure safety are four skate guards, two supervisors (one with first aid training) and one Park Patrolman to deter bicyclists. One necessity is an electrical outlet for the disk jockey. A local D.J. entertains the crowd with disco music and inspires the skaters with commentary. An area roller skating store donates the prizes.

The block long roller parties have attracted wide attention. Evanston newspapers run stories on "Wheels Are Rolling". Chicago papers have sent photographers, and one TV station included the event in its evening news broadcasts.

Both spirits and skaters fly high!
