State Reports

Illinois Crime Trends, 1972 to 1981, Illinois Law Enforcement Commission (June 1982), 86 pp.

This report describes the patterns of change in the eight "Index" crimes as well as three "non-Index crimes" (deceptive practices, forgery and vandalism). It also indicates the differences among rural, suburban and urban counties in the amount and type of crime, and in crime trends.

Shoplifting in Illinois, Illinois Law Enforcement Commission (March 1982), 10 pp.

Between 1975 and 1980 property lost by retail establishments (outside of Chicago) increased by 8 percent when figures are adjusted for inflation. About two-thirds of such losses were sustained by department stores. Since actual losses are higher than reported losses, figures in all cases are higher. Chicago's losses probably equal those for the rest of the state.

The Directory of Interpreters for the Deaf, Department of Rehabilitation Services, Division of Services for the Hearing Impaired (February 1982), 48 pp.

Interpreters listed in this third edition of the directory are divided into four geographic sections. Included in each listing are telephone number, address, availability, experience and (where applicable) the kind of NRID certificate held by the interpreter.

Other Reports

The New Federalism: Present & Future, a special report by the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce (June 1982), 24 pp.

In recent years Illinois has received about 70 cents for every dollar it sent to Washington. The new federalism will doubtless change that but how it is changed remains unclear and requires careful monitoring by all those concerned with the welfare of this state. While the chamber supports the concept of the new program, it wishes to point out areas of concern and suggest ways of dealing with some of the problems.

Items listed under State Documents have been received by the Documents Unit, Illinois State Library, Springfield, and are usually available from public libraries in the state through interlibrary loan.               Anna J. Merritt
