Income tax proposal

EDITOR: For the past several months I have been mystified by the farrago of articles in the daily press regarding the varying status of the income tax proposal. My compliments to Diane Ross on an excellent, clearly written account of what has been happening; it is the first clear statement I have seen. I do not usually read Illinois Issues, but will do so from now on.

The reporter and Durbin

EDITOR: Any comment which I would make regarding Mr. Littlewood's April 1983 article concerning my hiring of Bob Sampson from the Decatur Herald and Review would appear self-serving. Let us rely on objective evidence to determine Bob Sampson's fairness and objectivity as a reporter covering the Durbin-Findley campaign.

During the closing days of this heated campaign both candidates, through their campaign staffs, met and chose a panel of newsmen for the only debate of the campaign. Both candidates were given the power to veto any newsman suggested by the other candidate. Both Mr. Findley and I through our campaign representatives chose Bob Sampson of the Decatur Herald and Review to serve on the debate panel.

It is fairly simple in a retrospective piece to infer partiality based on subsequent events. The fact that both my opponent and I would choose the same newsman after months of news coverage is the best evidence of Bob Sampson's objectivity during the campaign.
