RUN TO SPRINGFIELD

IPRA repeats its most successful public awareness event. The Run to Springfield August 8-11. The fourth annual Run starts Monday, the 8th, from WGN-TV Studios, Chicago and from Turley Park, Carbondale.

Over 50 relay runners, mostly IPRA professionals, will again carry the scissors to the Illinois State Fair for the opening day ribbon-cutting ceremony. If past performance is a guarantee, IPRA should again receive statewide media coverage and citizen awareness of the leisure movement.

Old State Capitol

This year, a mini-extravaganza will be added to the Run when the northern and southern runners meet in Springfield at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 10 at the historic Old Capitol Mall. Festivities planned by the Springfield Recreation Department include music, free beer and brats. The department has also slated golf and tennis tournaments plus tours of the capital and surrounding areas for any runners or IPRA members who come down for this big event! So plan now to take in the fair and to have fun with your colleagues in Springfield. More information will be made available as plans materialize.

ELECTIONS

In early August, all voting members will receive two ballots. The first covers the election of IPRA officers and Board of Directors for the coming year. The second outlines the bylaw changes necessary to implement the new certification plan.

The Admissions and Standards Committee has conducted a series of statewide meetings informing members about effects of the proposed changes. We hope that all voting members will take the time to review the ballot materials and return their votes. If you have any questions on the issues, please do not hesitate to contact Kay Forest, Executive Director at the IPRA office. It is important that each member becomes an informed voter.

COMMITTEES NEED HELP

It is difficult to think about 1984, but that's exactly what Patti Roth, IPRA President-elect, asks you to do. She is currently in the process of forming IPRA committees for next year. If you can help your association by serving on one of its 20 committees and task forces, please send a note to Patti Roth at the IPRA office. Committee interest forms will also appear in an upcoming newsletter. Much of IPRA's work (and the reason that it is one of the top park and recreation associations in the country) is due

LEGISLATIVE AWARENESS GOLF OUTING

Final arrangements are being made for the 6th Annual Legislative Awareness Golf Outing to be held Friday, August 5 at the Arrowhead Golf Course, Wheaton Park District.

The joint Legislative Awareness Committee, co-chaired by Ralph Cianchetti, Highland Park, and Mike Ryiko, Streamwood, promises fair weather, temperatures in the low 80s for the golf outing, and a delightful evening for the Buffalo Tro cookout. With that kind of a weather prediction, the legislators and commissioners can't afford to miss this event. Everyone is urged to dress casually.

The purpose of the Legislators Golf Outing is to involve as many commissioners, state legislators and congressmen as possible so that they may interact in matters of concern to the leisure movement. All area coordinators are asked to send in their registrations by July 15.

JOINT LEGISLATIVE TAILGATE PROGRAM

Something new — the Joint Legislative Awareness Committee will sponsor a Football Tailgate Party on Saturday, September 17, at the University of Illinois in Champaign when Illinois takes on Stanford. Game time is 6 p.m.

Prior to the game, beginning at 3 p.m., Tailgate activities will get under way next to the Stadium. A carnival atmosphere will prevail at the IAPD/IPRA joint tailgate program. It should be a good game and Chief Iliniwek will be there.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS NOV. 17-20

Clear your calendar now for the joint Annual Conference which will be held November 17-20 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. Theme of the Conference is LIFE. BE IN IT 1983.

Numerous informative workshops will be presented on opening day, Thursday, and lunches and dinners will follow, with the awards luncheon scheduled for November 19. (See box announcement on the Awards program, page 4.)

PHYSICAL FITNESS COMMEMORATIVE STAMP

Have you seen the new 20¢ Physical Fitness Commemorative stamp issued by the Post Office? It ties right in with the LIFE. BE IN IT. movement and we urge all leisure professionals to use it in their business or personal mailings when it is possible to do so.

The first day of issue ceremony took place May 14 in Houston following the National Fitness Classic, which is sponsored by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

FROM IAPD (Cont.)

The stamp is intended to draw attention to all forms of exercise, sport and physical fitness activity. Artist Donald Moss chose the running sport to symbolize the modern fitness movement, and he depicts one female and two male joggers dressed in appropriate running attire. Behind the runners is a wavy line representing an electrocardiograph tracing symbolizing the role of the heart in physical fitness. It is an attractive stamp.
