The General Assembly

circa June 30, 1986

During the final days of the spring legislative session, the tension and power surrounding the last-minute deals cannot be captured on film, hut these photographs do show the scenes: the chambers, the galleries. And the players: legislators, staff, lobbyists, reporters, the governor. These are photographs taken June 30 and July 1 and 2 by the official photographers of the four legislative leaders: Martin H. Simon, House Democrats: Randy Squires, House Republicans: Ken Burnette, Senate Democrats: and Jay Barnard, Senate Republicans.

Below: In the Senate chamber, with the galleries packed, Sen. Richard F. Kelly Jr. (D-39, Hazel Crest) leans on the edge of his colleague's desk while conferring with Sen. Timothy F. Degnan (D-ll, Chicago).
