Committee to Commemorate United States Constitution, in Illinois, Inc.

BECOME A BICENTENNIAL COMMUNITY

In 1987 Americans will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution. This is an event of historic magnitude, one that will find commemorative activities scheduled throughout the year, culminating on September 17, 1987, when Americans everywhere will join together to honor both the Constitution and the free society which it helped create. The Revolution gave us freedom; the Constitution gave us the means to keep it.

Your community may receive official state and national recognition as a "Bicentennial Community". An organization or agency can be given the responsibility of coordinating the activities in your community, or a local official can establish the commission through legislation or by proclamation.

To receive official recognition, as well as permission to use the official bicentennial logo, the local commission must apply for approval to our state commission:

Committee to Commemorate United States
Constitution in Illinois
75 E. Wacker Drive, Suite 2100
Chicago, Illinois 60601
(312) 726-4853

The application process is quick, as there are few requirements:

1. The local membership should be broad-based and representative of the population at large;

2. It should be duly authorized by local officials; and

3. The commission should have a good idea of what it wants to accomplish. It need not be funded at its inception, but it should have a plan for raising funds for an operating budget.

Once approved by the Illinois committee, your local commission may apply to the National Commission. An appropriate certificate will be given to all communities receiving national recognition.
