CHARLES "CHUCK" HENDERSON, vice-president of the Kankakee Valley Park District, is seeking election to the Illinois House of Representatives from the 86th District.

Henderson feels that his foreign trade background and 35 years of business experience will help him address the area's two most pressing problems; economic development and agriculture. He served on an Industry Sector Advisory Committee (1982 - March, 1986) which advised the Reagan administration on trade policy matters. In addition, Henderson has been a park commissioner for 10 years, a board member of the local school district and active in various other community concerns.

Henderson has a master of business administration degree from Northwestern University and a bachelor of science degree from Bradley University. He is a district sales manager with the A.O. Smith Water Products Company. He and his wife reside in Kankakee.

CATHY PUCHALSKI, administrative coordinator with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) in Highland Park, recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Western Illinois University (WIU).

Ms. Puchalski is a WIU graduate with a bachelor of science degree in recreation and park administration. The award honors the alumnus who has worked to promote recreation professionalism between the department and alumni, and professional involvement within the field of recreation.


The Champaign Park District received the second place 1986 Governor's Hometown Award for its Clark Adopt-A-Park program. The district won in the 57,000 to 110,000 population category. Joining Gov. James Thompson were (from the left) Adopt-A-Park co-chairs Harriette Scott and Kathy Buckius and Pat Sims, the districts coordinator of volunteers. The Hometown Award is presented tor excellence in community involvement.

TED FLICKINGER, executive director of the Illinois Association of Park Districts, has been elected president-elect of the American Park and Recreation Society (APRS), a branch of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) for 1986-87. He will serve as APRS president in 1987-88.

The APRS is the largest of the seven NRPA branches. Its 6,000 members are public park, recreation and conservation professionals from the United States, Canada and several other countries.

Flickinger's campaign focused on a variety of improvements for both APRS and NRPA. He especially stressed the need to implement a new organized legislative program. "Lobbying for and with the entire APRS/ NRPA membership is essential if we wish to have input into those decisions which affect our work patterns, our profession and the life of the citizens we serve," Flickinger said.

The Crystal Lake Park District announces the appointment of two new staff persons.

JEANNE SMITH serves as recreation supervisor/sports and athletics coordinator. She previously worked at the Dundee Township Park District, City of Elgin Public Property and Recreation Department and the Lisle Park District.

Ms. Smith is a 1985 graduate of Northern Illinois University with a bachelor of science degree in education.

She also earned a bachelor of science degree in recreation services through George Williams College in 1979.

She is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA).

JENNIFER SHOELLHORN has been named recreation supervisor/ youth coordinator.

She graduated in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree from the Recreation and Park Administration Department at Indiana University. Her professional affiliations include membership in both the NRPA and IPRA.

Ms. Shoellhom was superintendent of recreation at the Park District of Forest Park for two years. Her other positions have been with the Mundelein YMCA, Des Plaines Park District, the Park District of Highland Park and the Vernon Hills Park District.


Park districts from the Champaign-Urbana area will join with local merchants, charities, and other civic groups and national distributors at the GREAT AMERICAN CHILDREN'S EXPO Sept. 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall in Urbana.

The purpose of the event is to acquaint parents with the many services and products available to them in their community. It will provide informative lectures, workshops and a variety of informational and product exhibits pertaining to family insurance and financial planning, nutrition, child care, first aid for children, child safety and grandparenting.

For the children, the Expo will feature games, clowns, learning experiences, face paintings, balloons and puppet shows. In addition, several gymnastic, theatrical and karate organizations will hold exhibitions.

October 1 is the deadline for entering items in the 1986 AGENCY SHOWCASE competition.

The Showcase will be held at the Peoria Civic Center during the Illinois Park and Recreation Conference Nov. 20-22.

This year's Showcase includes seven categories: best single brochure cover, best single brochure content, best brochure series, special facility brochure, special programming brochure, special program logo and agency logo.

New for the Showcase this year is a policy that enables all agencies to enter as many categories as they choose. All entries received by the deadline will be available for judging.

The top 20 (10 from each section) per category, as chosen by qualified judges, will be displayed at the conference. The judging will again take place approximately two weeks prior to the conference. Winning agencies will be notified by mail.
