■ Governor's Task Force on the Future of Rural Illinois (March 1987), 38 pp.; available from the Office of the Lt. Governor, Rm. 214, State Capitol, Springfield 62706.

In his 1986 State of the State address, Gov. James R. Thompson announced the creation of a Task Force on the Future of Rural Illinois and named Lt. Gov. George H. Ryan as its chairman. In its final summary report, the task force calls for four policy goals: maintain the rural emphasis of the state; bolster its rural economy; strengthen local government; and improve education and human resources. Several specific steps have been taken to implement these goals, for instance, the creation of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University-Macomb and the Agriculture Research and Development Consortium in Peoria.
