Teena Mackey has been promoted to superintendent of recreation for the Joliet Park District.

Ms. Mackey has held various part-time positions with the Recreation Division since 1974. She became a full-time recreation supervisor upon completing her undergraduate degree in 1981.

Ms. Mackey attended George Williams and St. Francis Colleges, and has completed course work toward her masters degree at Valparaiso University.

The Hazel Crest Park District has hired Patty Jo Boehm as a recreation supervisor. She replaces Donna Soltanek, who resigned to accept another position.

Ms. Boehm recently received her bachelor of science degree in leisure studies, program management emphasis, at the University of Illinois. She served as a student intern at the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and has worked in a part-time capacity for both the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and the Matteson Parks and Recreation Department.

In an organizational restructuring program, the district has named former recreation supervisor James Pacanowski as superintendent of recreation. Pacanowski has been with the district as a recreation supervisor since August, 1984.

He has a bachelor of science degree in recreation and park administration from Illinois State University. Pacanowski is currently a graduate student at Governors State University in the master of public administration degree program.

Alene Valkanas has been named executive director of the Illinois Arts Alliance.

Ms. Valkanas was previously the manager of community and cultural affairs for the Chicago World's Fair — 1992 Authority, and the director of public relations and programming at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Most recently, she served as program officer for the Pittway Corporation Charitable Foundation.

The Illinois Arts Alliance is the State's principal advocacy organization for the arts. Ted Flickinger, executive director of the Illinois Association of Park Districts, serves on its board of directors.

Matthew A. Flamm has joined the Chicago law firm of Orlikoff and Flamm as a partner.

He is the secretary and attorney for the Lighthouse Park District in Evanston.

The Round Lake Area Park District announces the addition of Cindy Herr to its staff.

Ms. Herr, who has a degree in recreation with a public administration emphasis from the University of Indiana, will be the district's program supervisor. Her strong sports background will aid the district greatly in providing related services to the community.

Thompson Dyke and Associates, Ltd. of Northbrook, IL, has announced the association of Karl Van Cura to their land planning and landscape architecture design staff.

Van Cura received a bachelor of science degree in landscape architecture from Iowa State University. While earning his degree, he did independent study in historic landscape preservation and interdisciplinary study in historic architectural design.

Dave Cooley has been appointed to the position of sports and athletic coordinator with the Fox Valley Park District.

His duties include the organization and administration of all athletic programs and leagues for the district.

Cooley recently completed his masters degree in recreation from Indiana University. His previous full-time experience was with the Recreation Department in Ketchikan, AK, as sports coordinator.

He is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

Obituaries

William H. Freeberg, professor emeritus and former chairman of Southern Illinois University's (Carbondale) Recreation Department, died on Feb. 23. He was 67.

Freeberg gained international attention in the 1950s when he organized summer camps for physically and mentally handicapped children at SlU's outdoor laboratory on the shores of Little Grassy Lake. Now known as the Touch of Nature Environmental Center, the outdoor laboratory still has Freeberg's touch.

served as president of the "Friends of Touch of Nature," a group of workers and campers with ties to the complex.

Freeberg set up the national Special Olympics program in the 1960s. In 1948, he was the first person in the country to earn a Ph.D. in recreation (Indiana University).

Freeberg began his professional career at SIU as assistant football coach, an instructor in the Army and Air Force ROTC units, and Athletic Department business manager. Later he was in charge of initiating a new intramural athletics program.

He worked his way through the promotional ranks and was promoted to full professor in 1971. From 1953 to 1965, he chaired the Recreation and Outdoor Education Department. He earned a master's degree in physical education from the University of Illinois, and a bachelor's degree from SIU.

During his tenure at SIUC, Freeberg received numerous awards. In 1985 he earned the Educational Council of 100's Award of Merit for his contributions at Little Grassy, He was inducted into the SIUC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981, and received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1980.

Donations in his memory may be made payable to the "Friends of Touch of Nature," c/o SIU Foundation in Carbondale.

Events

The Illinois Travel and Tourism Council has opened its 1987 Illinois Governor's Conference on Tourism to exhibitors with the addition of the "Tourism Expo" area.

The conference will be held in Springfield on Wednesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 14, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. The Tourism Expo is an opportunity for Illinois businesses to expose goods and services to hotel executives, travel agents, tourist attractions, convention and visitors bureaus, tour operators, campgrounds, chambers of commerce and State legislators.

This year's conference will make available exhibit space for a fee of $150. The Tourism Expo will be the featured event during Wednesday evening's "Taste of Illinois." Exhibitors are encouraged to contact Illinois Travel and Tourism Council representative Nora Puglia at (217) 793-3733 for an application and additional information.

IAPD retains James March Goldberg to design new Springfield headquarters

James March Goldberg Architects, Lake Forest, has been retained to design the Illinois Association of Park Districts' (IAPD's) new Springfield headquarters.

"We are most fortunate to have the expertise of this distinguished architectural firm," IAPD Exec. Dir. Ted Flickinger said.

Goldberg's office has been retained to assist the IAPD staff in the initial evaluation of the existing building, analysis of design program and future uses, as well as the review of the various purchase and construction contracts.

"There are numerous examples of Goldberg's talents statewide in offices, medical facilities, restaurants, automobile dealerships and retail shops," Flickinger said.

"The new IAPD headquarters will reflect his creativity and outstanding professional credentials."

Professional background

Goldberg, who is president of James March Goldberg Architects, started the firm in 1972. He was previously the chief architect (1964-67), marketing director (1967-70), and marketing vice-president (1970-72) for Hoffman Rosner Corporation in Schaumburg (IL), and residential architect for Robert S. Arnold AIA Architect, Highland Park (IL).

Goldberg received a bachelor of architecture and design degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1958. In 1969 he attended the Graduate School of Sales Management, and Marketing Sales and Marketing Sales International at Syracuse University.

In January 1985, Robert Flubacker, AIA, joined the firm as Associate, bringing his expertise in commercial design, augmenting the strong residential base. Flubacker is responsible for the overall design of all commercial structures, including the IAPD headquarters.

Awards

Goldberg's firm has received numerous awards for his work. These include the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago's (HBAGC's) Gold Key Award for outstanding design in 1976, 1977, 1981, 1982 and 1985. In addition, he received two Silver Key Awards for outstanding design from the HBAGC in both 1984 and 1985, and the HBAGC's Bronze Key Award in 1984.

Goldberg was also honored by the Society of American Registered Architects with its 1986 Award of Merit for superior achievement and professional excellence. He received the Builders' Choice Design and Planning Award in 1981 for the best home improvement project.

Goldberg is a member of the Society of American Registered Architects, Building Officials and Code Administrators International, and the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago. In addition, he is chairman of the Downtown Redevelopment Commission, City of Highland Park, and a member of the city's Sign/Graphics Task Force.

The Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA) announces two new staff.

Laura Brown, superintendent of recreation, assumed her duties in June, 1986. She worked at NEDSRA for two years as a recreation coordinator and recreation specialist with a special emphasis in services for low incidence groups.

Her professional development includes enrollment in a master's program in guidance and counseling at Northeastern Illinois University. Ms. Brown has a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation and education from the College of St. Francis.

She holds certification from both the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) and the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

Pat McCord has been director of the Cabin Nature Center since June 1, 1986. He has more than five years experience as day camp and program coordinator for the Northwest Special Recreation Association. He has also worked for the Pontiac Correctional Center and the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department.

McCord has a B.S. degree and an M.S. degree in parks and recreation administration from Illinois State University. He holds professional certification at the State level.
